Between 1976 and 1981 there has arguably never been a better batsman in test cricket.
The dominance, the bowlers, the pitches, the ridiculous strike rate. Has anyone faced and dominated more ATG fast bowlers ever within a period of time? He was the greatest player of fast bowling in the history of the game.
He faced no minnows and unlike many batsmen, didn't play for average, he played to crush the opposition and to win. He broke the mould, he created a new standard.

Peak Smith was the best batsman ever bar Bradman. The guy was a freak, absolute freak. Idk if anyone will match that ever again.

Does it even need to be explained? Just check the stats. This guy averaged near 80. And he did in the modern game, against objectively the highest level that has ever been in cricket so far. Just dominated series, nothing fragiled him.
Insane how one can even say Peak Smith doesn’t have an argument over Viv. He was better imho and tbh very clearly better at least as far as I am concerned.
