**Official** 1st Test @ Perth, 22nd-26th November

I had a feeling this would be a low scoring series with the bowling attacks being stronger than the batting line ups but I didn't expect under 200 scores.

I was expecting under 300 scores., good test batsmen are hard to find these days,, Rahul looked liked the best batsman today and he's an old dinosaur,

Pretty certain that's why McCullum took England down the Bazball route - if you're only likely to survive for 30 odd balls, you may as well try to get 30 runs.

While the pitch has been pleasantly challenging and the bowlers (especially Bumrah and Hazlewood) bowled brilliantly; but I would say you won't be too wrong to say that the match has been between two fragile asf batting line-ups, to compete who can be shittier here.
Someone posted a tweet earlier which said the deck had something like .8 degrees seam in it or something and historically on decks with that much in them the average is 18 rpw. I’ve no idea how they could have a decent sample size to prove that tbh, but if it’s so then it’s not so surprising two pretty average batting lineups would turn in this sort of day.

Pretty sure they've got ball tracking for a long time though.

I suppose the best bet for Aus is Starc slogs tomorrow morning because he isn’t going to last playing orthodox cricket. Carey tbf has looked as good as anyone so far - who’d have thunk the fella who’s played every Shield game would be in the best form out of everyone? He’s basically got to make 60+ and have Starc and Lyon slog a few for Aus to get parity or close to it. I really can’t see the tail lasting if they’re trying to just keep the bowling out on this thing.

Funnily enough that's showing one thing I was worried about, which was that they are going to try make faster pitches by making them grassy and that would be a boon for India's bowlers, making it much more of a shootout.

Yes I know the ball's more favourable for bowlers now (though it has been at other times as well compared to the mid-2010s), but while this pitch was not as grassy as some we've seen recently there's still plenty there, and it seems to me that they don't roll it into the pitch as much as they used to, so it's deeper and the ball gets more bight.

Edit: and part of why I'm blaming the pitches is that the Dukes ball has long had a more prominent seam than the Kookaburra, yet even when it was used in the Shield up to 2019 it didn't I don't remember it seaming about as much as the Kookaburra has recently, even when it swung a lot.

Despite a seemingly good start that turned out to be one of the most worrying days of test cricket I've watched. Bumrah was absolutely brilliant but the batting looks shot. Every sign weakness I saw in the Pakistan and WI series last season was there but much more ruthlessly exploited. And they need to find a way against the other bowlers, Siraj etc. are decent but they're not on the same level.
I think for home games, Warner's retirement has made a bigger difference than what most people anticipated. This is the kind of game that he gets off the blocks quickly and put the pressure back on. At the moment, there is no drive at the top and they are just stuck until they get a ball with their name on it

That's Warner of a few years ago on flat pitches, not the most recent one on a pitch with some movement. He wouldn't have last 10 balls before being caught behind.

Australia were pretty unlucky today. India had the best of the batting conditions and then, of course, as soon as we start our innings the overheads come in. When I looked out the window with an hour and a half to go, it was nearly dark. Should've been called off for the day with us only 1 or 2 down.

Mind you, I am in Brisbane, so it was 6:30pm here at that stage.
