Lance Cairns scored 979 runs in 75 ODIs..

Ian Smith scored 1055 runs in 98 ODIs.

He wasn't a 26 average bowler. He wasn't remotely fast or remotely tall. All-out attacking batsmen not maximising themselves is pretty common. All out attack is volatile.

Let's agree to disagree then. Chappell is the one I am most sure of, I would probably rate them around equal in Tests as well; Chappell just slightly ahead. Greg was pretty great in ODIs, but not really close. Marshall is the one with the best argument honestly. Warne, I think Kapil did better included both formats. That longevity is special though. Kapil wasn't Great overall away, but is near ATG in WI and Australia with the ball and had his fair share of impact knocks to justify his average not being inflated.

So just to be clear, you think Kapil was even close to Chappell in tests?

Can't grasp that but ok.

For Warne, even including both formats, how is Kapil ahead?

I don't think the gap between Kapil and Greg in Tests is necessarily a huge one. The others I can understand, but given both formats have around equal weighing, will go Kapil just over both. Also deserves some points for pioneering the role of a late order basher in ODIs imo.

How is the gap between Chappell and Dev not a huge one?

A legitimate top 15, ATG batsman and a brilliant AT slip.

The size of the gap between them is quite considerable.

Dev was a good test bowler and a above average lower order bat. Just because you combine them, it doesn't bring you close to an ATG bat.
