On what planet? Cricket not popular in India before he came along? Come on. Great player, but failed as a leader at a time when India's batting line up was world class but repeatedly failed away from home under him. You can't even argue India was on the way up under his leadership when he pulled the pin or anything like that. In his last few years it felt as though everything revolved around what he wanted or didn't want in that side. I don't think it's a coincidence they got almost instantly better when he left.

Me too. Safraz was important for pioneering reverse swing, ditto Imran. Sir Gary needs no introduction. Lillee was the modern architect of fast bowling etc.

NBA was popular even before Jordan but he was the first superstar and he took the game to insane levels of popularity, endorsements, money. A big reason why they became insanely popular was because America changed tremendously under President Ronald Reagan. 1990s was a very important decade for India economically. Like Michael, Sachin Tendulkar was the right person at the right place and at right time.
