I definitely give him credit for WSC in WI.cant fault him for that.

And he played awesome against Hadlee in NZ in 81.
Yeah I think the only real issue is the lack of India tour. If he went there and smashed it against Bedi, Chandra, Prasana etc he'd probably be a top 5-10 Test bat ever.

Hutton is amazing. Has a valid case to be England's greatest ever cricketer. My #6 batsman of all time.
Yeah, the more I look into him, I constantly start thinking maybe he actually was better, he faced more ATG bowlers than Hobbs did

Definitely a more Test accomplished batsman than Hammond. The latter's bowling and fielding might tilt it in his favour.

do you consider Statham an ATG pacer even? I for sure have both Fred and Lillee ahead of Statham by a distance but not different worlds or whatever
Probably not, but I feel sometimes we underrated him really. Statham was around as good as Trueman in WI and Australia and has his longevity as well. Played a higher % of matches away, but Trueman has clearly superior home record. Don't really think he was in Fred's tier, but the gap is what I am not sure of.

Pretty much he toured really scarce for my likings, lacks a record in SC and wasn't exactly Great in England, the only country he toured regularly as well.

Well I consider Sachin better, but Viv was well ahead of bats of his era as far as standing goes to an extent even Sachin was not. Viv was such an anomaly in cricket history, batting well ahead of his time at a 70 plus SR. Great batting peak ever and no real flaw in his overall record.

And we have to think how hard it is to absolutely dominate worldclass pacers at their peak, in their own homes, yet Viv did so repeatedly.
Exactly.

Don't think anyone anyone else could do what he did. Sobers probably came closest.

True, but 50s England was also...quite rough, and he did succeed in it, 50s Australia was rough too, 40s was easy
It was, just pre War was even tougher. Probably I am underrating Hutton now thinking on it...... I will have to think again.

Lara was considerable closer to Sachin than Sunny was to Viv.
Nah. Sunny closer to Viv for me overall than Lara to SRT. When Lara retired Sachin was equal to him, and he played for 6 more years and hit a magnificent second peak. Not a huge gulf overall, but Viv and Sunny closer.

So was Chappell.

Viv had a better peak. Greg was way more consistent and has an almost perfect all round record. It again comes down to peak vs consistency
What Chappell did in WSC is why I have him neck and neck with Sunny at around 10. It was impressive as hell.

There are some of the long form vids on YouTube.

No debate here
Unlike Subz I don't doubt that Kallis was an ATG batsman, but the comparison to Sobers as a batsman falls flat.

Sobers was also leagues ahead in impact as a bowler and while both were equally safe at slip, Sobers had more range and flexibility.

i guess it depends on if you think performance against ATG bowlers + Tough conditions is better or performance against varying bowlers + ultra tough conditions is better. I'll probably also think about this lol

Hobbs played in a much tougher era though.
Hutton's elite level carried into the 50s and he has an excellent record in low-scoring tests incl some all-time crackers against a great Australian team. Hobbs is the more decorated cricketer overall but Hutton can go up against nearly anyone.

Yes Tendulkar had a second peak but also a dip towards the end.

Overall has a notable bump over Lara but Sunny was never rated near Viv.
