Boycott averaged 45+ in 6/7 countries.

Kohli averages 40+ in 5/8 countries.

Boycott was an opener as well and he gets my vote

I don't think Kohli can take much credit just for playing on if the performances aren't really there. The argument for him over Boycott is he was a more complete batsman in his prime.
Peak vs Sustaineance basically, tho I still his peak stats are a little inflated but eh, whose aren't?

If we are comparing peaks, shouldn’t we compare the lows as well

Minimum of 3 Tests per year
Kohli : 14 years. Averaged 40+ in 9 years.
Boycott : 14 years. Averaged 40+ in 12 years

Years in which they averaged less than 40.
Boycott
1966 : 22.33
1969 : 37.10

Virat
2011 : 22.11
2020 : 19.33
2021 : 28.21
2022 : 26.50
2024 : 22.73

Comparing peaks in that manner.
Years averaging above 50:-
Boycott:-
1967= 293 runs @97.66
1968= 625 runs @52.08
1971= 766 runs @109.42
1973= 522 runs @58
1977= 505 runs @126.25

Kohli:-
2013= 616 runs @56
2016= 1215 runs @75.93
2017= 1059 runs @75.64
2018= 1322 runs @55.08
2019= 612 runs @68
2023= 671 runs @55.91

I think Kohli takes this. Boycott often played minimal tests in those years boosting his average. Also his high averaging years rarely came back to back, though should be given credit for ending nicely with 3/4 40+ averaging years.

Again it comes down to peak vs consistency.

Does Boycott have any series resembling Kohli's 14/15 BGT, 2018 in ENG or 2013 in SA? Don't think so.
1970-71 Australian Ashes, if short tours like the SA 2013 one count, 77-78 Pakistan tour counts as well, you can count the 1981 Windies tour as well.
