Mad take.

You need someone in ODI to bat the entire innings at that rate and let the rest bat around them. It's why England were so crap the World Cup as we didn't have it, we just tried to hit everything for six.

Match winning knock as it turns out.
Left runs out there when he slowed down for the ton. Anchors need to be going at run a ball these days. It was a decent innings nonetheless but if you play 100+ balls you need to give your team that big flourish at the end and finish with a 100+ strike rate at least imo. This only applies to the run fest ODIs.

Looks like Livingstone, on the other hand, did play a classic.

He struggled a bit in the field as captain but that's one hell of an innings from Livingstone. Think giving him a bit more responsibility as a bat is overdue; feels like he's spent ages coming in at 6 or lower slogging to no effect. He's a better player than that and his constant diet of T20 has damaged his ability to bat to a 50 over tempo.

Whatever it takes!!!
Wow.. amazing result. Well done to both teams but both teams struggle with their bowling a bit so, to some extent, at least I was expecting such results from either side, chasing.

Realistically he isn't batting higher than five in the ODI team and maybe even 6-7 but he's shown he's capable of batting maturely. He's a definite upgrade on the Mo of the last few years.

Salt and Bethel gave away their wkts when England were still way behind. When Bethel got out england needed 169 from 22, and whithout the docs amazing hitting they wouldnt have got 100 off the last 10 overs. This is a very inexperienced/experimental team still learning how pace themselves over 50 overs, plus it looks like the doc hasnt really got used to handling his bowlers, as his best was left with an over left to bowl. But seeing the vital role Cox has to play in NZ. its more concerning that he looks very out of form . Hes got 1 more try before the t20s start, so i hope he makes use of it.

A team still learning how to pace themselves over 50 overs. Answer:

a) the hard way: lose plenty of international matches that they shouldn't have and face being dropped.
b) the easy way: play more domestic 50 over matches
c) pray for rain so all ODIs become 20 or 16.4 overs long
d) play on roads so that they can range hit right from the start (practice that golf swing) - 500 plays 500 problem solved

Livi captained Lancashire in the Blast in 2023 in exactly the same way. I suspect he aint going to change.

Lolok, I'm encouraged by Bethell, but what you need from top order bats in this form is to go on when set, particularly on pitches like this.

So I still think that if I'm picking a 50 over side, none of this top 4 get in if everyone is available. Still one match to go though.

Sam Curran's inning a bit different and he almost saw us home with Livi. Marks out of 10m for those 50s, I'd give scrappy an 8, the other two 6's. Bit worried that his bowling is toothless outside T20 though, but at least he can bowl, unlike Jove and Stokes.

What’s your first choice top four?

Salt should know better by now, but he's such a one trick pony that just hasn't really kicked on. Always gets found out against the real top bowlers.

That Cox innings was very alarming, looked all at sea for most of it and then bounced out on a friendly wicket. I've heard that his Dad is a good mate of Key's.....

At least Bethell looked comfortable until getting out in a slightly daft manner.

Time for a decider. Sounds like a bit of rain around again, toss winner likely to bowl you'd think.
