Fun fact: Steyn has more fifers in victories than any bowler, and has great records against the top order as well as the tail
And I have him 4th all time and one of 3 candidates for the 3 spot on my AT XI. No one is doubting how amazing he was or that he was a match winner.

The rose colored glasses coming out again.

Every bowler has bowled trash at some point or another. Whether it's one paced, predictable, bit innacurate, due to tiredness, or whatever, they've all bowled trash and got hit.

We simply don't remember the older ones spells of it as clearly as we do Steyn's because Steyn's haven't yet been pushed out of our mind's memories by an endless loop of highlights that we remember the older ones for.
Saw more than a decent amount of Marshall's career, and most of McGrath's.

It wasn't the same.

Steyn went for more runs because he aggressively pitched it up more , constantly enticing batsmen to drive unlike pussies like McGrath and Ambrose. A true big dick strike bowler.
And this is also true, hence why I have him a hair above Ambrose.

But Ambrose was also capable of, and had his fair share of destructive spells as well.

McGrath found his lane and perfected it. Have to give him kudos for that.

Do you think Steyns record vs australia is any worse than Mcgraths vs SA ( Steyns is actually way better imo) ? Please be honest. I genuinely don't understand why this kind of stuff is not brought up when discussing some bowlers.
McGraths in SA is better.

First was his early career series.

Then two quality series in 96 and 2001 against pretty decent SA sides where he consistently bowled tight and strangled them really.

Steyn in Aus in 2008 and 2012 was pretty poor outside of the Melbourne 2008 Perth 2012 tests.

I rate Steyn above Ambrose mainly because there are significant question to me about Ambrose's effectiveness in the SC.

I think Imran and Steyn are closest.

South Africa was a stronger team and playing that home was somewhat of a disadvantage, he averaged much better than them in SA. Steyn struggled almost as much in his more helpful home conditions against both teams.

So you mean he took only 8 wickets in some pretty flat pitches in 2 matches, more than any other South African; except the match in which he took a World Class 10-fer and gave a top 5 performance of all time??
