*Official* New Zealand tour of India 2024

International Captain
The other two first innings collapses had some top bowling from NZ but I'm sorry this one is so hilariously self inflicted. Pure comedy.
Yeah it’s helpful conditions out there but NZ didn’t bowl consistently enough to have a side 4 down. If anything, could have done with a few more overs of pace. India’s decision making however is so muddled at the moment I was kind of expecting something like this.

Whatever it takes!!!
There seems to be a belief that they can just hit their way out of a situation. There really doesn't seem to be any willingness to just allow the game to slow, let the bowlers control the tempo for a while, and then accelerate later when conditions ease, or when the situation suits (i.e. not ten minutes before stumps). It just has to be all dominance, all the time. It's a very Darren Lehmann sort of gameplan which is very odd to see tbh.
Goes back to my point about Rohit captaincy. When the chips are down, they are all in on the counterpunch and when that fails, they have nothing left. One of the reasons to build from the base in test cricket is that it sometimes leaves you enough in the tank for an aggressive punch when the timing is right. These guys dont want to wait for that moment. That is a very Rohit failing I am seeing. Or at least a very post-Shastri outlook.

We did that thing of absorbing pressure and letting the opposition bowlers and even batsmen be on top before coming back strong and tiring them out even against England last year.

This team showed a ton of mental fortitude against England a few months ago even with an underperforming middle order. They look completely cooked mentally here for whatever reason .
Maybe they’re focused on the BG? Only takes a slight lack of focus at the top level to lose the necessary edge

Kohli needs to speak to Will Young about getting some confidence.

A confident Kohli would have batted without needing a nightwatchman, even when the nightwatchman got out he took a crazy single to get off strike.

He is still batting OK but his head isn't right, he needs a few sessions with Shastri to set him straight.

Absorbing pressure and letting the opposition bowlers tire is exactly how you won here both in 2018-19 and 20-21, and why I keep going on about Pujara's departure being a top priority that India need to address. You can't win consistently against good sides unless you're willing to flex and bend with the demands of the game; if you're so rigid and inflexible that you don't ever adapt to the game, the game will break you.
