Best SA ODI Pacers

Thala_0710

First Class Debutant
Rank these 4 SA pacers on the basis of their ODI performances:
Fanie De Villiers
Makhaya Ntini
Dale Steyn
Morne Morkel

FdV
Ntini
Morkel
Steyn

Fanie clearly much ahead of the pack, almost at the back end of the Donald/Pollock one. Ntini slightly ahead of the other two and Morkel and Steyn are basically interchangeable.

Why? His numbers look very ordinary to me. Doesn't have a single 5'fer in 83 matches. Took 95 wickets @27. Was he rated really highly in his time?

ER of 3.57. With Donald there, he didn't need to strike, but being misserly. And he was cheap, really really cheap. FdV isn't going to give you lots of break throughs, but you will be glad to score anything of him. Also, I might be slightly biased. My father is like a huge fan of his, like even rates him ahead of Donald in ODIs. I won't go that far, but he indeed is clear of the rest of the bunch for me as well.

You can argue it the other way. Donald could have happily attacked because first craig Mathhews, then Fanie and Later Pollock kept it extremely tight at the other end.

If you consider all SA pacers, it would go as

Pollock
Donald
Fanie
Steyn
Morkel
Rabada
Ntini

Even Tsotsobe was very impressive during his limited career.

Fanie had a very good slower ball and yorker which he used well at the back end of innings.

Would have gone to the 1992 CWC over Tertius Bosch I reckon if he wasn't injured. Donald, Fanie, Pringle, Snell isn't bad at all.

Unluckily didn't play much in the 1996 CWC because the team/squad was so stacked which caused too many deliberations for selections. Craig Matthews was pretty solid and vice-captain and then all the ARs.

It's a credit that Ntini had such a good career with the lack of a slower ball. Particularly at home he was excellent & always remember him doing well in the Tri-series in Oz.

Morkel definitely a better limited overs bowler than Steyn. Easier as played a lot together.

That is quite something.

I don't why, it's just going from memory I guess that it felt like Morkel was tougher to attack in limited overs cricket.

But it's perhaps unfair on Dale who bowled up front and death a lot of the time.

International Captain
Fanie was awesome. For a minute he and even Cronje laid a deathtrap for Tendulkar with those offcutters on middle stump which he'd invariably flick into a shortish midwicket's hands.
