*OFFICIAL* England in Pakistan 2024

Down the ground off the front foot is the way to go. Root, Brook and Pope didn't adapt to the pitch. Crawley just played a nothing shot and Stokes is cooked v spin.
I certainly thought the Crawley and Pope dismissals were very mediocre when I watched the back end of the first hour and a little bit on. I was on my way to work by the time others were in but not surprised Stokes perished the way he did. I'm surprised that the innovative batting selections don't come into force for Asia. Surely Keaton Jennings is a good horses for courses pick?

If these two can stay in for a bit, surely Pakistan will have to try their other bowlers reasonably soon. I know the two finger spinners only jog in for a few yards but even so it must be a tough gig bowling 25+ overs on the spin, breaks or otherwise. I say this as a recreational tweaker who always got knackered after 8 overs in any case!

Batting horse for course selections always seems to carry a more dubious stigma than bowling equivelants for some reason and this regime put a lot of emphasis on showing relentless confidence in the players that are invested in.

Pope for instance certainly doesn't make our best team on the subcontinent. I'm not entirely sure he makes our best team anywhere in fairness.

Although a couple of beauties from Noman there to show there's still plenty of life.
Yeah but you always expect those and they played them well - played the line, didn't push the hands, covered the stumps. You just accept that those will happen and move on.

That's a good deal of my point really. If you have someone almost certain not to make runs, then after a while you have to consider your options here. To be fair, Pope got a ton first match in India but then did pretty much nothing for the rest of that series. He's been woeful in Pakistan, though.

That innings in India (during which it should be noted he was dropped badly at least once) looks more and more a freak outlier by the day

Gillespie was talking about he's had no control over the pitch or selection.

Also criticised the board and reminded them he's warned them of short-term gains over the long term.

Picking a bunch of journeymen old spinners and producing turning wickets is just that.
I think to succeed long-term Pakistan need to prepare something closer to their more traditional wickets and go with a two-pace, two-spin combination depending on what allrounders are available. But they're clearly desperate for a win and the ultra-flat pitches like in the first test clearly do them no good at all, especially against a team as attacking as England.

I do suspect that if Shan had his choice he would have gone for another bowler, perhaps another fast bowler, over Zahid though. He didn't put him on much in Multan and hasn't for nearly a session and a half here.

The one thing i am liking about these pitches is seeing Noman bowl at speeds that haven't regularly been seen in test cricket since Ian Johnson was playing.

He doesn't have much of a defence period, but that defence is even more minimal against the spinners.

42 overs must be the record for opening bowlers going unchanged?
Cricinfo did some digging up on this it's actually nowhere close.

The record for most overs unchanged for opening bowlers is 115 overs !

Joey Palmer and Edwin Evans bowled 115 overs unchanged for Australia vs England in 1882 .

That'll be four ball overs. It's equivalent to 76.4 six ball overs. Though I don't think there's a longer instance for opening bowlers, and maybe not even one that comes close.

Like him as a player. Limited and definitely not an aesthetics batsman but he's up for a scrap and plays consistently at the high end of his threshold in all formats. Keeps his spirits up while in the field, the type you'd want in the trenches alongside you.

Behind the stumps, the relentless appealing stuff that very obviously isn't out is a bit much after a while, and I think he's quite an overbearing personality in general.
Like I said he talks it more than he walks it, I prefer the keepers that are less talk and more action, the Jack Russell types rather than the Paul Nixon types

I suspect Pope at least currently just has that Marvan Atapattu thing going on. The guy who played 90 tests, scored six double centuries (albeit two against Zimbabwe), and managed to keep his average to 39.02. Of players with six or more, the next lowest average is Sehwag at 49.34.
