Watched the first half hour in bed, nice lively deck eh
There was one slow mo which was actually comical because of how much the air went out of the ball after it pitched, like a popped balloon

Will definitely get hard to score once the ball gets old imo

Is Shan just not paying attention? How is that sweeper still not in the right place and covering that square boundary?

Yeah when you’re watching on a phone and have just woken up you can’t quite appreciate the nuances but it was more like after the ball pitched I couldn’t see it half the time

Well once again this pair lay a solid platform. Not been risk free by any means, runs are going to be important on days 1 and 2 as it will only get harder to bat. Go long and big here boys.

That was Crawley/Duckett's 14th 50+ first wicket stand, which is joint 7th most for England. They've opened together 38 times.

Also scoring 14 such opening partnerships for England are Boycott/Edrich (35 innings), Boycott/Gooch (49) and Atherton/Stewart (50). Cook and Strauss got 30 in 117 innings, Hobbs/Sutcliffe a ludicrous 25 in 38.

Crawley has reverted to mean of late after that purple patch, hasn't he? Whereas Duckett seems to be kicking on more consistently.
I'm happy to let Crawley off this series given he was out injured for months coming in to this. Needs to do more in New Zealand though under my beady eye.

TBF Duckett was on a lean patch himself. Was averaging mid 20s after his India ton for a 10+ innings streak.

The top 3 are all very much boom or bust. It's just the nature of their game being somewhat limited. Duckett gameplan is far less muddled though especially in these conditions, so I think will breed more consistency over the long run.

As much as they've got their runs playing aggressive cricket, they just can't grasp the concept of scoring runs aggressively can be done by rotating strike too.

Do the hard work of getting 50-0 why not be greedy and want to double/quadruple that start.

Yeah I was thinking this. No major issue with the fact he rarely goes big, because he was always getting to 40-80 which when coupled with a partner that does the same, and a middle order containing Root and Brook then that’s exactly what you need. But at the minute he seems back in pretty little 25 mode.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I actually think Duckett is pretty consistent at getting scores, and very iffy at going big. Whereas Pope is certainly feast or famine.

Agree that the general style is all or nothing.

Edited the post. He was averaging below 30 prior to this series following on from his India ton.

Then between his Ireland ton and India ton he was averaging mid 30s

Not quite as low as Pope and Crawley troughs but still troughs.

Re: Crawley the main concern for me would be more that it's just such a "Crawley dismissal", a hard handed drive on the up to a ball which was not at all there to be driven given the conditions. It's just not a sustainable method long-term.

Yeah, just think his problem is different to Pope's, but not without his issues yeah. Can't see the refusal to leave on length translating well in Aus for instance.
