Kane Williamson not in league of other elite test batters

Not Terrible
New Zealand is a lot tougher for top 3 batsmen than middle order players and Williamson batting 3 is a plus point for him. I suspect South Africa, England and the West Indies are tougher for the top 3 though. NZ isn't uniquely difficult for no3s and as has been mentioned, the help for bowlers over there fall apart pretty quickly on a regular basis.

The figures above show that NZ has the highest batting average for #3s of all Test countries since Dec 2012. However if you remove Williamson's figures from that NZ sample (71 innings averaging 71) the average for NZ is 33. His utter dominance is skewing perspectives here.

If you remove Williamson from the top 3 figures, the average of all other top 3 batsman in NZ since Dec 2012 is 32.45.

No other top 3 batsman comes close in NZ/SA/Eng/West Indies conditions.

Take away the main no. 3 numbers from most of those countries (Pujara from India, Labu from Australia, Amla from SA) and that no. 3 average nosedives as well though.

I don't think it's true that no.3s in NZ have it particularly tougher than most other places in that time period.

It's a difficult place to bat anywhere in the world.

Averaging 71 at 3 at home is pretty amazing and you'd be hard pressed to find a handful of players with a better home record (Bradman, Lara, Sanga?, Ponting?) and the latter 2 played on some pretty tame wickets.

It genuinely doesn't. Kane is the biggest outlier of this era by a considerable margin

Williamson is likely to be out for the whole series against India. Missing the series (again) in India, which was probably his last chance to improve his record in the country. Don't want to hear the excuses now of he hasn't played only 1 test in IND since he turned 24 or whatever, got to accept his poor record in IND, ENG and SL now (and likely SA too after another series) for what it is. If he doesn't improve in those countries, the title of the thread is definitely right
