Crowe as he had the better peak and was severely disrupted by injury at the back end. Had a dominant series v the peak versions of Marshall and Waqar (both of whom had support at the other end) and was more ruthless at scoring hundreds.

But it's close as Gower has a very similar overall average and overseas average in a similar length career as a contemporary, and it's not as though he had the benefit of flatter home pitches, a kinder distribution of fixtures, or even a better team.

Gower v Richardson v Azhar would be close
Azharuddin was a liability in pace/bounce conditions. Richardson never had a prolific tour of Asia. Gower has both those bases covered, and has no major shortcoming elsewhere. Good at home (incl at 3 which is very tough in England), lots of daddy hundreds, very consistent etc.

Gower is objectively close (in fact very close) to Greenidge, Lloyd and Crowe. If that is an uncommon opinion, then he has become underrated.
