Is this a joke?

Gower was better than Thorpe who was clearly better than Vaughan.
not really

Vaughan had an odd career trajectory but was a legit shout for best player in the world at his peak and took down some of the world's best bowlers and notched up 18 centuries along the way.

Gower is a contender for 2nd best England batter to debut in the last 50 years.

No 1 - Root

Contenders for 2nd:
Gower, Gooch, KP, Cook
(Brook has the ability to join this group in a couple of years)

Currrently 6th - Thorpe

7th down whom I'd put equal or above Vaughan:

Robin Smith, Stewart, Trott, Trescothick (all above), Strauss, Bell, Atherton, Lamb (all about the same as Vaughan).

Gooch among the four with Gower being close imo. Can go with any order for Cook and KP. Leaning towards cook slightly for now.
