I mean Nathan Lyon got his Test debut off, what, four FC games and a few good Big Bash games? Cummins got his off maybe three FC games? And those were honest to god (and actually quite important ones in the greater scheme of things!) Test matches, not the epitome of the throwaway white ball tour during footy finals that like three people care about. In that context, getting a run off "potential" alone isn't that much of a stretch.
From what I saw in the U19's World Cup, Beardman didn't exactly look like the next Cummins. As you mentioned previously, Vidler looked like the real talent.

Lol those are awful comparisons and you know it. Lyon and Cummins were exceptionally good and international standard despite their lack of games, and first choice players for their respective states. Beardman isn't even close. This is not the same thing.

There's an argument to be made that it's not a bad selection decision because "potential" and "giving experience" etc., even if I disagree, but the comparison to Lyon and Cummins is not one

17yo Cummins was one of the quickest bowlers we have ever produced in this country while Lyon had an action of exceptional quality plus we had no decent spinner (our other one on tour was Michael Beer)

They mean little in and of themselves, but seeing as the format has been massively marginalised, especially at domestic level, they are pretty important for those who are playing

Aussie highest ODI averages (SR) for batsmen in the squad

Smith - 43.91 (87.41)
Head - 42.05 (102.56)
Green - 39.42 (81.77)
Labuschagne - 37.63 (83.04)
Marsh - 36.10 (96.18)
Maxwell - 35.40 (126.91)
Carey - 32.98 (88.40)
McGurk - 25.50 (221.73)
Inglis - 22.83 (105.11)
Short - 17.33 (77.61)
Hardie - 10.33 (67.39)

That's a lot of bats for an ODI squad. Lowest 4 still have something to prove

That's almost a batting order right there...

Abbott - 21.21 (108.00)

Positively Boycottian, Baz disapproves

If Beardman got a game that'd have to be a record of least matches before selection. He's played one List A game for WA and that's it. He took 1-42 off 6 overs

Meanwhile Jhye Richardson is fit after just playing 3 T20 games in Darwin
JY is fit? thats so unusual, they should fly him over ASAP before hes injured again. Pretty good record against england.

Even if Beardman doesnt get a game, i hope he grows a beard not just a limp tache. A big one like Neser has or had.

For England, is John Turner still fit? didnt appear in the T20s.

Why do you keep putting Carey over Inglis, he hasn't bee in the ODI side for over a year since he was dropped at the start of the World Cup. Bit weird that Carey's even in the squad IMO

That's not what's unusual. Even if Jhye wasn't fit there's like 50 quicks ahead of Beardman in the pecking order

Pretty sure the plan with Jhye from WA is to take the cotton wool approach, really ease him back in slowly. So he was probably never really a realistic prospect for this tour

As for Beardman, yeah him being in contention isn't what I would have done at this point in his career. Notionally he's only supposed there as a travelling reserve as opposed to in the squad proper, but with the way things have gone with injuries the odds of them needing to call him up for a dayboo are short indeed

That being said however I do genuinely believe him and Vidler (who has a groin issue at the moment) to be a couple of the brightest pace prospects Australia has had in a while, but yeah this feels too early to me

I really can't get up for a white ball international games outside of a tournament these days.

Even then I thought both previous World Cups were largely poor, far too many one sided games.

Enjoyed the New York games for the fact they were bowler friendly and not just slogathons like plenty of T20 end up as.

I'm just sad my pal couldn't swing me hospitality for Durham next week. I'd have been there with bells on.

Hoping that all the odis are full games

I think Australia will win the series but I’m hoping some of the England players have great series

I’m off on a holiday so missing the game at CLS which I made a rookie error in planning and didn’t check dates

I’m not sure on this but could Australia have lost every game they’ve played there ? Definitely lost in the 2013 test, I can’t remember the white ball games

Cricinfo match page says the Aussie squad have been hit by the virus that took Marsh out of the 2nd T20. Says several senior players affected.

All set for Beardman debut due to half the squad being sick 😆

It also says Inglis hasn't been training due to quad soreness, so Carey might be needed after all?

Reports are that Maxwell, Starc & Hazlewood have the virus and are unlikely to play. The team cricinfo posted seems to make more sense now

Australia: (possible) 1 Travis Head, 2 Mitchell Marsh (capt), 3 Steven Smith, 4 Cameron Green, 5 Marnus Labuschagne, 6 Josh Inglis/Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell/Matthew Short, 8 Sean Abbott, 9 Mitchell Starc/Ben Dwarshuis, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood/Aaron Hardie
