He's batted 4 times in those games and struck at ~200 for the balls he's faced. We don't have anyone else who can walk in from ball one and do that. Just for reference, stoinis has faced a similar number of balls in 4 innings this tour and struck at run a ball in a team with Abbott walking in at 10. Not hating on either, it's just the nature of being a middle order bat in t20 cricket.

He has 43 runs from 25 balls this tour so SR of 172. My thought was if your most aggressive bat only gets 5 balls per game at #6 then he's a passenger. Maybe bat him at 5, where as you point out Stoinis hasn't done much (40 off 38 balls)?

Ide go the opposite route. Greens not a guy who can come in from ball one and wack it. Push David down to 7 so he gets to do what he does best (smashing pacers from ball one in the last 5, and float inglis-green-stoinis depending on the matchup and pitch.

This is a good example of why #batdeep can be overrated in T20 cricket. Even if it theoretically allows your top order to be more aggressive, your no. 6 and 7 barely face any balls most games, let alone no. 8 and below. So sacrificing a better bowler who will give you 4 overs in favour of a slightly stronger no. 7 is foolish.

You see it here with Aus playing Cooper Connolly, a batsman, at no. 9 as a bowling all-rounder lol, and he hasn't batted at all in his 2 games. Take away Connolly for a proper bowler and they would do a lot better in most matches. Now I know Aus wouldn't do this in an important game and they tend to, if anything, go too hard on playing the "best" bowlers even if they don't have recent T20 form but I digress. Just thought it was a current example to demonstrate the point.

I can only assume that given Brook, Buttler and Duckett would all be obvious first choice squad members, they didn’t want to give an opportunity to anyone who might further confuse selection. It’s worked…

Reckon he's just been there for the touring experience. He's not anywhere near any squad on merit. Still strange that he's been given 2 games so far and been left "did not bat" at no.9 both times

They didn't have a choice as Aus only had 11 fit players to pick from last game. At least tonight's game they have 14 to pick from with Marsh and Hazlewood back plus Dwarshuis added to squad

TBF, connolly has only played at #9 because Australia had noene else to select in those 2 games without messing up their rotation plans for the bowlers from what i've seen, don't think he's being seriously considered for the ashton agar type role.

He played today in a pre-season warm up for NSW so he must be fit. Guess they just didn't want a second spinner in the squad.

In the same game Oliver Davies made a golden btw
