Can't say I've seen anything of Jordan Cox to know about if he would be good for an opener. I'm guessing that as of the present, they simply haven't found anyone in the system who is a particularly good fit to be a test match opener in the way Stokes and McCullum would like.
Played at 4 this season domestically, has he opened before? If not, we’re really running the risk of the same issues as we’ve had with Lawrence and Pope (there are some promising top order players around in the CC right now, but they seem a way off, and I think batting, especially at the top of the order, is a bit different to bowling whereby technique is key regardless of your attributes)

I think it's just that they want to continue with Crawley/Duckett once the former is fit, and aren't really interested in finding a new opener. So they just played a guy who they've had around the squad for a bit who was up for it to temp. Which is fair enough really, because while I don't think Crawley is the greatest or anything this would be a pretty stupid time to drop him.

I do wonder how far Zaman Akhter and Ajeet Singh Dale are from a call-up, they are faster and have altogether more respectable first-class figures, but Hull is potentially gold-dust with his height and angle

Think sl have real chance in this match a tired english attack and pitch that is known to spin esp has they have prabth Jayasuriya who is 3rd best spinner in the world

Good post, except the fact that Crawley is the greatest

Wow Atkinson playing 6 tests in a row and he played in the hundred , also selected for ODI team ..Asking a lot from the guy
V good point, and perhaps he should be rested after the oval as they have a load of other seamers in the squad for the odis
like carse and mahmood who havnt yet played.

i wonder if Hull and Creepy are related they look almost identical even sound similar although JH is 2 inches taller.

I think Cox opened a lot when he was at Kent, but all his success this season is AYS at 4. We seem to have loads of batters who can bat at 4-6 where there is no vacancy, but not many good no3s better than Pope, who i expect is going to stay at least for the pakistan tour. Hope he gets the runs for his own sake and englands.

so england seem to be very lenient on the batters, giving them as many chances possibles. but the seamers are under the most pressure for their spots

We've recently lost 2 stalwarts of the team, Woakes and Wood are also both mid 30's. I think it's right that they look at as many potential replacements as possible, especially with an Ashes Tour next year.

As for the batting, only Crawley was really given excessive chances and it turned out to be a fair decision in the end. The only spot remotely open to question now is at 3, and frankly, no one is exactly knocking the door down for an opportunity.

With there being a fair bit of rain about in London today, a first real autumnal feel here, I wonder if it will definitely be a bat first day tomorrow. I'm off to the game Saturday.

Could well be a bowl first day, especially as Day 2 looks better for batting.
