And your point is? Just an FYI that was the first proper "turner" Root played on in India in his first 8 tests! Maybe we should just make roads all the time & also give the toss advantage, which you usually get any way.

It's really quite praising that when applying half a dozen filters with the specific intention of making Root look bad, he's ended up 5th in the world and well ahead of several other world-class players.
Root has a massive hole in his resume the size of Oz and yes, India. He has 1 inning in a winning cause, batting first here, and one supporting(?) role when Pope won the game. So maybe it's you who should look at his record in context when talking about past greats!

And your point is?
That this isn't a good way of evaluating anything. If you just click a bunch of filters until you squeeze out a few numbers that make the output from a handful of tests look mediocre with the speciific intention of doing that, all it's shown is that you're able to use filters. You could do a similar job with any player in history, it doesn't actually reveal truths about the cricket, it just says something about you.

When you're comparing the top 0.1% or 0.001% of all cricketers ever, there's only one way to gauge them - through filters. You could argue whether one "filter" is better than others, but realistically speaking, there's no objective way to come to a conclusion. It would depend more on what you give more weightage - like Ponting played for by far the best team of his era, so is that something negative(positive?) than Root's relatively poor record in India or extremely below par numbers in Oz?

Which is? Maybe being overly defensive about a player or two reveals more about you than me!

Personally, I know one filter that has proven exceptionally useful by being appropriately broad whilst still only being applied to the most elite games. It's called "test cricket".

if you take out the innings where Root performed in India, yeah ofcourse you can make some dumbshit argument about him struggling in India.

3 Tons, a 45 average over the biggest sample size, best SR and weakest batting lineup is not "struggling" in any sense, the list is for overseas batsmen

and just for the sake of it, here is Ponting in England, if you can find him at the first place

if Root is struggling in India, I can't put in words what Ponting is doing in England.
