capt_Luffy

International Captain
1.Virender Sehwag (IND)
2.Chris Gayle (WI)
3.Kane Williamson (NZ)
4.Kumar Sangakkara (SL)
5.Younis Khan (PAK)
6.Shakib Al Hasan (BD)
7.Brendon Taylor (WK) (ZIM)
8.Rashid Khan (AFG)
9.Pat Cummins (AUS)
10.Dale Steyn (SA)
11.James Anderson (ENG)
Taylor only kept in 4 matches though..... Sanga is probably the more natural keeping choice here.

I thought this was going to be about those born in this century as some kind of dedication to Smith.

Amla opening??
Batted top 3 and is a better player than Sehwag and Cook. I would say Kane is better than them too and specifically a better player of lateral movement which is very important for openers. But if we must keep it to openers, I will take Cook over Sehwag just.

Amla only opened twice in Tests though. While I think he is a better bat than both, I still think they're pretty close. So, don't think Amla really should open here.

Well I would pick Cook to open alongside Smith if you think it's unjustifiable. I picked Amla because I think he's better than both and as a no3 was quite translatable to opening.

Pujara might make more sense as a makeshift opener but I think Cook was better than him anyway.

De Villiers opened in heaps of Tests but he wasn't very good at it which makes that one hard to justify.

Batting 3 in South Africa is more like opening than batting 3 anywhere else so I get the Amla instinct. Obviously opened in limited overs cricket too.

Yeah, I totally get the Amla reasoning and would had done so had the other opens were worse. But I don't think they're, atleast by any significant margin.

4.Rahmnullah Gurbaz
5.Devdutt Padikkal
6.Jamie Smith (WK)
7.Marco Jansen
8.Shaheen Shah Afridi

2 new ball bowlers from Hazlewood/Broad/Asif/Bond
Lyon (edges Swamn)
Mitchell Johnson, Mohammad Shami, Mitchell Starc, Trent Boult, Morne Morkel are successful all formats bowlers with very good samples. Surely they have to be ahead of these 20 test cricketers who are forgotten except Bond who in my opinion was all quality and a sure great if not for injuries.

Jamieson is also really quality and arguably even better than Bond with a bigger sample size and a career ahead...... Asif, Harris were also quality. Don't get me wrong, I agree with your feelings, just think an exception for Bond is unnecessary.

Cook wasn't a great player in seaming conditions but an average of 44 when opening in England across a long career is very serviceable. Sehwag was a failure opening in countries where the ball moves laterally which is a fairly critical skill for an opener. Cook wasn't as dominant as Sehwag in Asia, but he was very good there and thus, the more versatile opener.

Pretty good although I would play a specialist opener instead of Amla.
I think I can simply add 4 names to this list and make a solid test squad of 2000s debutant- Cook, Sehwag, Jadeja, Anderson.Amla remains in the squad as a backup no.3.

Jamieson has to perform in Asia or Australia/South Africa for that. He has shown his ability only in New Zealand and WTC Final where the conditions were very NZ alike. I think he has to prove more.

Fair but Bond himself never proved himself in Asia. Was largely unsuccessful in the 2 matches he played in Sri Lanka, and to top it off really struggled in the 2 matches vs Australia, the Top dogs. Played 8 on his 18 games against BangZim WI.

Picking Root as 5th bowler and that too with Ashwin as lone spinner doesn't help because both are off spinner and can't bowl in tandem.
