Who was the greater cricketer? I think these two Saffa openers were pretty equals as bat, with hugely different approaches, with Bruce being a highly defensive accumulator and Graeme a lefty stroke maker. Smith has his captaincy and Bruce was more than a part timer with his leggies. Both good at slips but Bruce probably ahead there. So who was the greater cricketer?

Mitchell is a fine cricketer but what’s the case he is a better opener other than he’s black and white

This is black and white

To consistently disparage cricketers solely because they played before the 70's is a bit overplayed. He played from the 30's up to after the war. That period included Hutton, Bradman, Headley, Hammond, O'Reilly, Grimmett etc etc.

He was a defensive but efficient and very good opening batsman, a useful leg spinner and brilliant slip fielder.

It’s not disparaging to say there should be an asterisk on all pre 1991 South African cricketers because they weren’t allowed to play the dark nations.

It’s also not disparaging to say that modern players play in a much broader variety of conditions that create a greater set of data points.

That said, Mitchell is an outstanding cricketer but it’s unequivocal that Graeme Smith is more outstanding, by the numbers and by context.
