How is Allan Border remembered as a captain?

I wonder what he makes of the weakling claims of you lot celebrating drawn series over here
He mentioned he wasn't too thrilled with it, in between laughing at England not having won a single test here in 13 years and counting

I’m sure if he’s the champ you’d say he is he’d know it’s series that matter

Yeah and you haven’t won one of those against us in near a decade too. Difficult to win a series if you aren’t winning individual tests tbh

Cling to whatever you want, the most prolific fast bowler of all time debuted, took 700 wickets and retired since you guys last won over here. Allan Border must cry himself to sleep at the embarrassment

I think he’d be laughing himself into tears at England’s “greatest” 21st century player taking 3 wickets a match @ 36 against his main opposition.

Amazing for you to bring this up again after your humiliation last week. Bold

Let's not believe the revisionist idea that in 89 England were expected to lose. It was supposed to be another thumping of Australia but this was a turning point where Borders team started to get the results of Borders patience (without accepting their crap) and insistance they were going to do everything they could to win. No more wilting under pressure. Waugh finally came good. Taylor starred, and importantly the team put runs on the board that let our bowlers start to attack again (plus Warnie, of course).
Taylor inherited Borders work. Waugh implemented Borders work with better resources. Those too young to know have no idea how long Border captained Australia. It was from 84 until the mid 2000s. And he took a team with this guy* as one of our premier batsman and bested by everyone and turned it into a team that worked harder than all to be bested by none.

*Sorry Greg. You were my favourite player after Border at the time. A cult hero, but indicative of our standards at the time.
A lifetime ago my X worked at Cobb and Co while attending uni. One night the Aussies came(think the 90 tour) and she basically spilt half the teams drinks on your man Greg Ritchies lap. She always said it was one of the most embarrassing moments of her life but also added that Greg was really
cool about it at the time.

All I've learnt from this thread is that AB is responsible for turning Australian cricketers into the ****s we've seen the last 30 odd years........so is that his legacy?
When you live in Australia for any period of time, you realise that Allan Border is not the catalyst for this. And I don't say that with any malice towards Australian people. It's just a different mentality to sport, certainly business and anything else with success and failure attached to it.

Seems to me like Allan Border's legacy to Australian cricket was that winning is the thing. He was never there to make mates, even within his own environment. He identified that not talking to England throughout 89 (?) was the best course of action to win a series, so he did it. He was ruthlessly tough on his own players - Dean Jones the obvious one, but I've heard he challenged McDermott, Hughes and co in a way you could never do now. Thing is, he did it without actually stepping over the line. He never spat on anyone, ball tampered, abused umpires, or brought the game into disrepute in any major way. Then you see him in the commentary box, and he seems like the nicest bloke there is. So he was putting on an act, seemingly, with the best interest of Australia winning Test matches and ODI World Cups. He was adored by the Australian public for that, and seems to have undying respect of everyone who played against or with him. Not a bad legacy to leave behind.

So yeah, I think he is responsible for all that came after his time. Given Australia's success after his time, that's pretty note-worthy. He probably gave rise to Steve Waugh and his approach, and Waugh was also ruthless but not a cheat. Then the lines started to become a lot more blurred over time, Ponting running a second income as an on-field umpire, Clarke happy to claim any catch that bounced within the inner or outer circle he was in at the time, Steve Smith and his inability to control the egos around him, then the shitstorm that was the piss poor bloke that Tim Paine is. Obviously that influence faded over time.

Love this part.
Every time I read about Deano being approached by a bookie in Sri Lank, and Jones, after refusing to participate in the crime, panicking that Border might hear about it, I think that only a man of impeccable integrity will be respected like that by his peers and opponents.

I think Jones had a mixture of awe and terror towards Border until just about the day he died tbh. Leaving aside the Chennai innings thing, he often told a story of dropping a catch in an ODI at Sydney and the batsman being bowled next ball which basically meant Aus would win the game. They all get int eh team huddle and everyone's happy, congratulating the bowler and each other. Border is all "well done lads, well bowled mate." Turns to Jones "And YOU, you ****ing ****! Don't you want to ****ing win?"

Greatest or not, Border has always been the cricketer I respect the most, by a distance. Also he is an out and out ATG, probably the best Aussie bat between Bradman and Steve Smith
I have him 3rd tbh, but I don’t think there’s that much between him Ponting and Waugh.

Fair enough, but for me Border’s success across conditions is a clincher and he batted above Waugh for a good portion. Also I think Border should be given credit for having a record at positions 3-6, a sign of good versatility
