And another far from surprising entry for the second test. Ben Duckett, seemingly with going to his missus' maternity ward on his mind, falls for 70 after a very electric innings.
These are the stats I come here forIf every England batsman played every innings exactly as Duckett did today we'd never lose another test match. Delete this thread.
Ide hope noene died mid game.Test match wins in which at least one player made a 50-99 score: 1576
Test match wins in which at least one player died not make a 50-99 score: 0
60.33 actually. Sure, he had a brilliant series against Pakistan a couple of years ago, but a) this is only his 14th test, and b) I would rather that he scored a range of tons so that he could maintain that high average and that England can regularly score 450+ runs in an innings. Someone tonning up big makes it a lot easier.Averaging 63 brook
You are correct it was 63 prior to his dismissal60.33 actually. I just find it hard to be that excited on a large average from a small number of games. There was one nutter who kept on going on about Devon Conway's huge average off a few games. It wasn't actually a surprise that after a more extended run, it flattened out. Not saying Brook won't be better than that, but a bit of perspective doesn't go a missing. You are correct it was 63 prior to his dismissal
it’s still a pretty decent start of his career
and he has went big to achieve such an average from the small sample size

It's from another forum so maybe there's just context and culture that means I'll never really get it, and that's fine, but I really don't get it.If every England batsman played every innings exactly as Duckett did today we'd never lose another test match. Delete this thread.
The context was for years, England batsmen getting to 50+, getting out somewhat carelessly and watching promising innings from the team capitulate say from 250-4 to somewhere around 300 and not getting the 450+ that you usually need to build scoreboard pressure. To be honest, I was much more for the score not very much about 50 being in vogue, but others (on the old 247 forum) simply decided that any unconverted ton was in scope. I personally couldn't be bothered to disagree, especially when England do criminally throw away good positions on a regular basis still. It's from another forum so maybe there's just context and culture that means I'll never really get it, and that's fine, but I really don't get it.
When I first saw it I thought it'd reserved for breezy downhill skiing or batsmen giving it away with soft dismissals right after reaching 50. But it seems to just be literally any time an England player scores between 50 and 99. "Pretty little fifties" don't seem to be a special category of fifties, it's just any time it happens, and apparently it's a bad thing.
The danger of allowing this sort of nonsense without the ridicule it deserves is that I think the regulars in this thread have convinced themselves that the former actually always applies to the latter. Whatever culture I'm missing seems to have been a slippery descent from observation into dogma. It's from another forum so maybe there's just context and culture that means I'll never really get it, and that's fine, but I really don't get it.

I mean if you don't like it you don't have to post in it. I personally think anyone who posts in the Player Comparisons sub forum should be locked up for their own good.....The danger of allowing this sort of nonsense without the ridicule it deserves is that I think the regulars in this thread have convinced themselves that the former actually always applies to the latter. And before you know it this sort of thing can dominate the recieved wisdom until there's only one 'fact' left that people know and the fact that it's bollocks does nothing to hold back the tide of easy takes.
I'm afraid deleting the thread is the only reasonable action before the cult spreads. Purge it now.

What is the point though?I think you're thinking about this too much.
Chin's post summarises above. Think it was covered earlier in the thread too. What is the point though?
Lynch hbI kinda agree with PEWS and Howe on the lack of clarity of what this thread actually means but given its something our friends from another forum have started as a continuation of what they did there, maybe we just let them have this thread. There is no compulsion to read on our part, right?
I have won the game already.Lynch hb
