Greater has more to do with accomplishments and standing in the game. Lara, based on what I saw him do vs some of the best bowlers to have ever played the game, was better.

Hobbs, by virtue of being the first "test" great, the original goat even, his pioneering role and how much better his was then his early peers, deserves to be seen as greater.
