Probably one of the players I least ike(cause my friends build him up too much, as a person he seems lovely and nice enough). However astonishing longevity from a fitness perspective, and to his credit, he got better with age, across conditions as well. A model of perseverance.
lovely and nice person is the most controversial comment i've seen in here so far.

always came across as a grumpy ****.

absolutely elite bowler. great fun to watch when he was on it. englands leading pace bowler in test series wins in india, australia and pakistan. not bad for a cloud babby.

the last link to my teenage years. this is all making me feel old AF.

Anyway, well done to him on an amazing career. Hope his retirement is long, healthy and unlike his usual demeanour, happy. Been a wonderful servant for English cricket. Deserves all the plaudits which will come his way.

This is bloody gutting man

Ben and Baz can **** off tbh

Fast forward to November 2025 Woakes can't play in Australia. Wood, Archer, Stone, Tongue, Atkinson, Robinson are all injured.

Who do England call on? Gonna have to hope Potts, Pennington and Cook are able to make the step up.
you say this as if jimmy won't pack his bowling boots

And yet they couldn't give him the series to become the 2nd highest wicket taker of all time. He only needs 5 more wickets ffs
It reminds me of what West Indies Cricket board did to Shivnarine Chanderpaul ..

Kicked him off the team because they did not want him to surpass Brian Lara's record. He was only 46 runs short.

He's gonna be hanging around as mentor for the rest of the summer.

No doubt is our bowling coach for years to come. So aye I'd be more than happy for him to be out there again.

I think that demeanour seems to be quite common amongst fast bowlers. McGrath was never happy on the pitch, but seemingly (like Anderson) far more lighthearted off it.

Steyn always looked happy go lucky on the field iirc

Anderson was given a farewell Test where all he needed was 9 wickets to pass Warne. If he was really great he would have done it like Greg Chappell who announced his retirement while still 69 runs behind Don Bradman. Went out and scored 182 in his last innings to get the Australian record
If he was like Greg Chappell he would've bowled under arm to try and achieve it.

Luckily for him, he's not.

Newcastle >>>>>> Melbourne tbf
Hey Newcastle isn’t that bad. If you keep out certain suburbs.
Like that you have similar place names in Newcastle NSW as you to do my neck of the woods i.e. Newcastle Upon Tyne.

I'm from Morpeth, Northumberland as opposed to the NSW variety.

Wallsend up our way is rough and Jesmond is posh so be interesting to see how they compare over there.

I met someone interrailing once from Newcastle Aus. Can't remember how we got onto similar named towns/suburbs.
