"Obviously, they've got some fantastic spinners," Buttler said. "Our two guys bowled well, but in hindsight, I should have brought Moeen [on] in that innings, with the way that the spin was playing.

Why didn't he?

Looking back, England top order was most at fault. They sort of gifted their wickets.

(over 3.1) Buttler threw it away, as he played a risky reverse sweet off Axar's 1st ball of the match. He should at least seen off a few deliveries off Axar and assessed how they were behaving before deciding what attacking shots to play on this surface. Instead, he played a mindless reverse sweep off the 1st ball! even though England were doing well till then 25/0 off 3 overs. There was no need for that.

(over 5.1) Bairstow also threw it away. He played an expansive cover-drive off his 1st ball against Axar without seeing or assessing what the Axar's deliveries were doing .. They were darts keeping low.

And Moeen just panicked. Only Salt got a good one. Rest of the top order gifted their wickets and put India wayyyy ahead in the contest and there was no coming back.

If England had batted sensibly like India did/ if they had played in a slightly measured way before attacking and choosing their attacking shots wisely, I think they could have got close.

Most of them however played like flat track bullies tbh, knowing only 1 way of playing -which is to attack/smash from the get go, rather than adjusting to the conditions and playing shots accordingly. On this pitch they needed to graft a little. Did they not see how Rohit and SKY pulled back their attacking instincts and started playing with a full bat. Imho England needed a proper batsman in their XI who could shepherd their innings and play in respect to the conditions. But they have accumulated too many hitters who usually need roads to do well.

It was a pretty humiliating exit for England in what was an underwhelming WC, following on from last year's 50 over debacle.

It goes without saying that Matthew Mott needs to go.

Whether Buttler should survive as captain is a more difficult question.

On that pitch against India it was always going to be tough but we shouldn't have been rolled over like that.

Our squad selection was muddled and we've made some strange picks in the starting 11.

Playing Wood in the early games was wrong. Not using Moeen on turning pitches was bizarre.

Plus we've become obsessed with batting 2nd.

It feels very much like the end of an era.

I'm sure there will be a review and it's much needed.

I know exactly why he didn't. He never bowls Moeen against right handers, the laptops have told him, even on a pitch like that (and funny how Rashid actually got Rohit with the wrong'un anyway).

I still don't think it would've made a difference, the Indian bowling attack is just better than England's anyway on a pitch like that. I guess it might've restricted them to 150 which changes the mindset on the chase, but I doubt it.

Part of the issue, of course, is how happy they are with being middle of the road. So often you hear Poms say “oh well, it was a good effort/ we didn’t expect to win anyway.” That’s what’s wrong with you people.
An inspired post, and much of it I agree with. It's frustrating, but I do think this attitude is changing. Why is Southgate getting so vilified at the moment? Because we know we've got a super-talented side that has a great chance to win the Euros, and he's not getting the best out of them. He'll be gone if he doesn't win it, especially with the draw we've got now.

I'm sure there will be major changes to the cricket team too. Two largely abject failures at consecutive World Cups should do for Mott. He's failed to recognise which players should have been moved on. The one World Cup he did win was from the team which was left for him by Bayliss. I'd imagine the T20 series in Sept between Eng/Aus will have a lot of new faces on both sides.

And a reminder that if we're talking pathetic, we should really be talking about Australia's record in T20 World Cups......now that is really not good for a nation that prides itself on success (and pissy lager).

Real football fans have been having a go at Southgate's tactics for years. There was a good amount of disquiet about Mott's use of the one-day team ahead of the last world cup, yet it was bizarre that both he and Buttler seemed to absolved of any real criticism at the 50 over world cup and that many of the players in that squad who failed seemed to be in the West Indies a few weeks afterwards. Re, the current squad, surely they have to move on a big number of players such as Bairstow, Jordan, Livingstone, Wood and probably one or two others from the t20 side.
