Bradman Connection Draft

Fuller Pilch

Hall of Fame Member
Vic Richardson

01. Bill Woodfull
02. Cyril Walters
03. Charlie Barnett
04. Stan McCabe 4
05. Vic Richardson
06. Keith Miller 1
07. Les Ames (wk)
08. Colin McCool 6
09. Laurie Nash 3
10. Herman Griffith 2
11. Chuck Fleetwood-Smith 5

Just need to decide who the captain should be - it will be one of Woodfull, Richardson, or Miller.

Will try to do a bit of write up tomorrow, but overall there is deep batting and a strong and varied bowling attack.

Cricinfo tells me he retired to become a dentist. Sort of thing you need in a side of this era.

He was always a dentist - he took a couple of years off from dentistry when Lancashire offered him the captaincy in 1947. Despite his short FC career he played 8 Tests, one as captain (in the only Test where Headley captained WI).

Top 3: Woodfull needs no introduction. He was one of the best openers of the Bradman era and averaged a staggering 65 in 1st class cricket. He is paired with Welshman Cyril Walters. Walters took many years to develop into a 1st class batsman, but did superbly in his short 11-test career averaging 71 in India and 50 in the Ashes. His 9 test innings in the Ashes included 7 consecutive 40+ scores. He finished with an overall test average of 52. Charlie Barnett, described in his Cricinfo profile "as one of the best batsmen of the 1930s" is at three. He was a very attacking player who averaged 35.4 in his 20 tests.

Middle order 4-8:

This is an area of great strength with 3 greats in McCabe @ 4, Miller @6, and Ames @ 7, supported by quality players Richardson @ 5 and McCool at 8. Having McCool batting 8 gives real depth and further strength to the batting.

Tail: Typical tailenders. Fleetwood-Smith was a genuine 11.

Bowling attack

There are 3 quality quicks in Miller (an ATG seamer), the lightning fast Nash (probably up with Eddie Gilbert as the fastest Australian of the 1930s), and the Griffith. Griffith dismissed Bradman for his 1st test duck and took 4/50 in the same innings when the Windies beat Australia in a test for the 1st time. McCabe and Barmett offer further seam support, while the spin attack has McCool's (right-arm) legspin and CFS left-arm variety. Fleetwood-Smith is described as a genius and having a right-arm and left-arm leggie working together would be very useful.

As well as being a great all-round sportsman (cricket, Aussie rules, baseball, golf, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, and swimming!!!) Richardson was a gifted fielder. His leadership and that of Miller and Walters would support Woodfull brilliantly. I'm extremely happy with this side.

Cricketer Of The Year
Clifford Roach

My Team:

Bruce Mitchell
Bill Brown
Clifford Roach
Keith Rigg
Lala Armanath (c) 3
Arthur Chipperfield 6
Alan Fairfax 5
Jock Cameron w/k
Ray Lindwall 1
Ian Johnson 4
Bill Johnston 2

Mitchell and Brown provide a proven opening pair with Mitchell regarded as an ATG South African. As an opener, Brown averaged an impressive 50.14 in 29 innings.
Roach, primarily an opener, has the distinction of scoring West Indies' first century in Test matches, followed two matches later by the team's first double century.
Rigg played only 8 Tests, scoring a century in one, but his first class average (42.00) indicated his ability.
Armanath needs no introduction. He scored the first ever century for India in Test Cricket in 1933 and was independent India's first cricket captain and captained India in their first Test series win. He scored over 10,000 fc runs at an average in excess of 40 as well as being a more than useful medium pace bowler.
Chipperfield was the first to be dismissed for 99 in his first Test. He later scored a century and averaged 32.47 in 14 Tests. He provides a part-time leg spin option with his best bowling performance being 8/66 for an Australian XI against the visiting MCC.
Fairfax was an all-rounder who played in 10 Tests averaging 51.25 with the bat and 30.71 with his fast medium deliveries. His test career was cut short when he emigrated to England to play professionally.
Cameron is often forgotten today but regarded by those who know about him as one of the best wicket-keepers in the history of cricket. Cameron was also a brilliant, hard-hitting middle-order batsman. His premature death, at 30, was a sad loss to cricket.
Lindwall requires no introduction. A fine fast bowler and a more than useful bat, he was an integral member of The Invincibles.
Johnson's ability as a spinner is often under-estimated. Another 'Invincible' he took 109 Test wickets @ 29.19 with his 'offies'. He often batted up the order with 24 of his 66 knocks being at 1-7.
Coming in at number 11, Johnston was no 'bunny'. His left arm medium/fast deliveries yielded 160 wickets @ 23.91 and he was another member of the 'Invincibles'.

Very strong top 4 and loads of bowling options. Ended up reading about cricketers I had never heard of which these drafts are always good for.

International Captain
^ Strong batting, good on spin, light on pace.

i think the possible number of selections for this draft was 140 or so. 10 teams comes fairly close to exhausting all the alternatives.
