Players whose reputation during their career was an inaccurate reflection of how good they really were

I agree with you on politicians (but then who on earth would be mad enough to be a politician in this day and age of media scrutiny??).
I would have to think about artists, but my first thought is that I'm not sure that I agree with you on that.
Philosophers and writers I don't know.

What I know is music and films.
And the peak of film production and movie making was the 1960s.
Music has seen a decline in the 21st century.

Also, standards in the professions have undoubtedly declined in recent decades.

I tend to agree strongly with you, that focus on quality has declined in general in the last half century.

I don't believe however that that means that WG Grace is the 2nd best batsman who ever lived.
As we've seen, first class teams in Grace's time would find players on the day to make up the sides. There simply wasn't the depth in quality to measure against, and it goes without saying that standards of coaching and training have improved out of sight since the 19th century.
I never saw Lincoln’s political speeches. I never saw him rally a crowd like Trump could.

I can’t imagine Lincoln being anywhere near him.

Agreed peak of movies was in the 60s. Proper film artists like Godard were popular and didn’t need to compromise on their art for box office. People loved and adored guys like Godard, Antonioni in that day

Directors also just cared about things, and spent time over things.

I don't think it's the greatest film by any stretch, but probably the most beautiful film visually is Visconti's The Leopard (1963). Almost every scene looks like a grand master painting. Every shot has been thought about and prepared in the greatest detail.
Nobody bothers with that **** any more.

And of course the 60s was the decade of the greatest invention, experimentation and ambition with the likes of Godard, Resnais, Buenel, Demy, Truffaut, Fellini, Antonioni, Rossellini, Kurosawa, Sujuki, Kalatozov, Lean, Kubrick and others. And so much visual beauty from all of these directors.

Think S Malik is underrated in retrospect; not sure what his peer rating was like.
Around 1992 some claimed he was the world's best batsman. Adept against pace and spin. Averaging over 60 during past three years. Main rivals were Crowe and Gooch. Then Lara put the debate to bed.

Match-fixing ban affected his post-retirement reputation.

That says more about the crowd than it does Trump tbh Lincoln's Gettysburg address is legendary........doubt anyone will be talking about anything Trump says (in glowing terms anyway) in 150 years.

Trump has never made a speech on an uncovered wet green top with no sight screens.
