I don't think it's THAT close really. Smith is better than Hayden and Sehwag, but not by the margin many are making to be.

I think Smith would average 50+ pretty easily with Younis’s home conditions. Younis’s overseas record is misleading as well since he was poor against lateral movement as well as pace and bounce.

He would average over 50 in practically any other home country. And easily at that I imagine.

I don't think average is the problem here really, Hayden already averages 50+ won't put him much close to Younis. Smith played in a more batting friendly era longer than Younis and for all his problems, Younis is exceptionally good in Asia and has stood up very respectfully in Australia, England and SA. Smith's 34 home average against non minnows makes it difficult for me to place him much ahead of Hayden and Sehwag.

Yeah but Younis would have a poor home average too if he was playing in SA. And Younis wasn’t very good against pace so his record in SENA is misleading
If we ignore home conditions, then yeah Younis is better.

He wasn't very good against pace, but still managed to do quite well in the SENA. I don't think it's misleading like Yousuf or something. And well, we shouldn't ignore home conditions, but we should also account for a batsman's failing in them more than them failing in 2 or 3 away countries. What he would had done playing with SA as home is quite hard to predict and frankly, isn't important.

Younis wasn't better than Yousuf v pace. I wouldn't say Yousuf had a more misleading record specifically outside Asia per sey. Younis was a lot better v spin, and mentally stronger.

Smith has a significantly worse average at home but that’s mostly down to conditions. If you think batting in SA is as easy as batting in Pak then I can understand why you think it isn’t close.

I meant to Yousuf's overall record, not in SENA particularly. I have a problem with PC's notion that weakness vs pace means SENA record is misleading. Younis was mentally very strong. A misleading record for me is when someone gets their average boosted by many not outs, cashes on weak attacks on easy conditions almost solely and lacks any impact.

34 is an issue I am not okay with attributing to only tough batting conditions really. Kallis pulled 55 there regularly, and both ABD and Amla have good home records in those tough conditions.

We’re not comparing him to Kallis or ABD lol. Kallis is a tier above Smith and ABD is clearly better than Smith as well.
