Reading back over the Eng discussion a few pages back, I tend to think this’d be the most competitive option.

But yeah, both or neither I guess.
I think picking Barnes but not Grace is also fine given:
1 - Definitely a lot more competition for 3 batting spots in the English XI than bowling spots.
2 - Barnes excelled in Tests specifically a lot more than Grace did, and a lot of people consider these Test-only XIs.

I'm not sure I've ever seen Grace picked but not Barnes though.

Don't think either faced sufficient quality competition, think the rules and the game was totally different from what it is today. We don't know what techniques were like nor will we ever be sure that Barnes even bowled.

Yeah I get your logic.

I also get the logic for picking both.

I also get the logic for picking Barnes but not Grace.

I just don't get the other combination.

The English team is the trickiest to choose.

Outside of the top 3, Knott and Trueman it's a crap shoot.

Even at #3 sometimes people pick another opener and move Hammond to four, but yeah those are the only five players who always get picked.

I know Coronis does it, and you don't care about s/r either, but my God.

A top 5 comprising of Sutcliffe, Hutton, Hammond and Barrington isn't winning test matches.
