Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of Wicketkeepers Poll

Line and Length

Interesting to see Horace 'Jock' Cameron make the list. He is certainly a 'blast from the past'. Playing only 26 Tests before his tragic death in 1935, his raw stats are nothing outstanding. However, he was regarded as the greatest 'keeper of his time and, as a hard hitting bat, once took 30 runs off a Hedley Verity over.

With 'keeper/batsmen in vogue with our voting, I was just a little surprised to note that Alec Stewart hasn't received a single nomination. He, like Sangakarra, was a far better bat when not the nominated keeper in a side.

Oldfield v Flower is a bad comparison because if you had both you would just play both. Flower as a batsman and Oldfield to keep.

Zimbabwe did pretty much that in fact as soon as they found a half decent keeper so that they wouldn't have to have Flower doing it.

A better comparison would be Oldfield v Prior or Haddin
I was saying in a situation where you could only have one of those. And well, Taibu could had played for Zimbabwe as a pure batsman comfortably.

Oldfield vs Prior is a sweep for me, as Prior wasn't a shoddy glovesman himself; though yeah, him vs Haddin is certainly interesting.

Just wondering how Lindsay is now being considered the next best (13th) when he only played 15 Tests as a keeper ;)

Yeah, Evans over Dhoni is ridiculous. Dhoni has a bloody double century and was a perfectly good keeper. No amount of keeping brilliance can influence the game more than the batting difference.

Farokh Engineer also getting screwed here.

agree that Dhoni is being underrated but this statement is bull****
Tell me if you can only have one of these two in a median or below median team as your designated Wicketkeepers, whom will you take: Bert Oldfield or Andy Flower?

(Yeah yeah, I am asking you this knowing well how much you hate the latter's keeping.... Agree that the sentence is quite arbitrary though)

He's probably the scruffiest/laziest keeper I've seen over the last 20 years. He does generally take most of the chances that come his way, but much of the time it seems like he can't be arsed and is often nowhere near the stumps when he should be. How often do you see balls bouncing off his pads because he can't be bothered to bend down and use his gloves?

As this is a wicket keeping discussion, no amount of batting will allow him anywhere near the Top 50 for me.

He is great at stumping though!

Dujon was invaluable to the fortunes of the WI, there's no keeper who would have been better suited to the quartet and those after. The half chances were worth more than a couple extra runs.

Considering how certain batsmen and bowlers get bigged up for longevity, surely some consideration ought to be given to guys like Boucher and Bari for that.

Boucher has never impressed me as a wicketkeeper, and watching him trying to keep to Murali sealed it for me.

Nah. From what I hear Bari was a good keeper but I saw a lot of Boucher and he was mid at best. He was just fortunate that SA didn't have anyone better for his whole career.
