***Official*** IPL 2024

International Captain
He throws lol. Even if you think he doesn’t do it now you have to wipe out a significant chunk of his career where he did. I think he doesn’t get picked for internationals because of this.
he absolutely does it now too

the difference is that he’s smart enough to not do it all the time and everyone stopped giving a ****

I don't want to be "recency bias" but Narine must surely be considered one of the GOATs of the T20 format? He is lethal with bat and even more lethal with ball and has done it for many years and wth great success both in franchise cricket and internationally. He is currently top 6 in both purple and orange cap leaderboard and is fantasy points MVP this season at age 35. Serious question, Narine top 3 T20 all time? Given T20 is a relatively new format as well. This guy is a living legend, think he will get more credit post-career than he gets just now.
I would say top 3 is :

1.Chris Gayle
2.Virat Kohli
3.Lasith Malinga

Gayle (I acknowledge trundler’s arguments)
Rashid Khan (he bats too but it’s hard to filter out some of the minnow bashing)
Bumrah (absolutely unreal economy rate)

Kohli has the best WC record I think

Kohli’s numero uno simply cause of his international record and plus he is amongst the top 5 or IPL bats. Gayle is significantly behind in terms of international record, ahead in IPL but record in other leagues where the all of the best don’t even play is not very important for me

i feel that gayle and malinga aren’t only format GOATs but also have permanent places on the mount rushmore for the format - they were there from when the format was a joke and were so instrumental in how it became what it is today… founding fathers of the twenty over game who were behemoths as well in their own right

De Villiers probably gets a shout for goat doesn't he? Fantastic t20 WC and franchise numbers overall.

Lacks the big game pedigree to be GOAT for me, bit like Harry Kane in football , world class talent but no trophies to show for it at international level and in the big franchise leagues he participated in, and unlike Kohli I think some blame can be held to ABD for this, he had this nervous energy about him in big matches, I always felt a runout was around the corner when the pressure was on AB's team.

Kohli doesn't bowl and bumrah doesn't bat decent enough to be even considered. Goats need to be all rounders proficient in both departments. Narine and Jadeja for example impact game both with bat and bowl as well as excellent fielding. Kohli's T20 strike rate also isn't top tier

Careful with this "the people who established the standards that everyone is judged by today should get credit for being the first to do so" business, the influx of posters over the last year who claim none of this matters will be onto you.

Kohli is also a serial loser. He has never won the IPl despite being there at RCB for many years with him as a key ingredient. Likewise India have underachieved for many many years with Kohli as a central piece. Yes India won ODI in 2011 but kohli was just a kid and a passenger then, it was msd's team. But regardless we are speaking T20 here and I think T20 is unique in that there's only 40 total overs to impact the game so i value all rounders more than i do in other formats. Someone who can bat then also bowl 24 balls for low numbers is more important than a batting or bowling specialist exclusively. That's why Gayle and Narine are so valuable.

Setting aside the fact that Narine does not "bowl" in any reasonable sense of the word and thus shouldn't be considered on that basis, no one is rating Gayle because he sent down a few pies every now and then. They rate him on his batting.

If we're going to go WCs as the be all and end all then it's just not true that having a ton of all-rounders is the key to victory. Most of the winners have done so on the back of great top order batsmen or great frontline bowlers - all specialist roles.
