Which current players are/will be ATGs?

Whatever it takes!!!
Still think limiting 30 or so is way too exclusive for a game that has not been the same even over any 25 year period at least in the last 75 years or so.

May I ask what your definition of ATG is?

Its pretty silly to not rate Kohli and Kane as ATG. Less sure if Root will get there because of Bazball.
Root has actually been pretty consistently rated above Williamson and Kohli here recently. 2022 poll: 36 39 38 respectively, @shortpitched713 anonymous listing (nov 2023): 19 25 27 respectively.

Yea i know. I can’t see him getting there if he continues to bat aggressively and throw his wicket away.
If you’re saying Kane and Kohli are already ATG, then shouldn’t Root be too? Even if you have a decline I’m not sure that drops you from ATG to “not ATG”.

My view is an ATG should have some combination of the following:

1. are they the best cricketer in their team for a sustained period of time (5 years or more)

2. are they the best at their position in the world for a sustained period of time (5 years or more)

3. does the weight of their statistical accomplishments stack up where they would be amongst the best in the era that they played (runs, wickets, averages)

4. did they contribute to a breakout era or set of performances that would be history defining for the team that they played

5. would they have been considered by their peers and well respected cricket commentators as an ATG

Yeah test cricket stats have remained remarkably consistent inspite of the game evolving so much over the years. A bowling average of 28 for a spinner and 22 for a seamer makes you world class most of the time. A batting average of 50 does the same. While there are some exceptions like the flat tracks of 00s (and 60s, I have heard), it stil makes it easier to analyze.

ATG definition for me:

With few exceptions, are players that have great records and are a sure in for their nation's ATG XI and on the short list for a World XI. Therefore for me, only Steve Smith for now fits that bill. Players like Anderson, Bumrah, Kohli, Kane, Ashwin likely make their teams ATG XI but nobody is considering them for an all time world XI. Players like Kohli, Kane, Root, Anderson are great just not ATG.

Bumrah I feel can join the ATG ranks with a few more tests.
Believe this as well.

Do you think Allan Donald, Michael Holding, Joel Garner etc. can make it to the world XI over Imran, Hadlee, Marshall and Mcgrath? Or do you believe they are not ATGs?

Allan Donald is an atg imo. The other two no they're great but they just lack 'something'. For my World XI, Donald's not making it over Hadlee, McGrath or Malcolm but he is in the short list of fast bowlers in the conversation. Some have suggested tiers for atg which kinda makes sense to me.

Would garner not have the niche of arguably being the best first change pacer ever?
