Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

Think they are rightly behind Bradman, Sachin, Hobbs, Sobers, Hutton. I have them both behind Lara as well, though that one is arguable I suppose.

Both strong contenders for top 10 slots which, you know, is pretty high.
It ain't actually for Viv tho I will grant Smiths position is dynamic at the moment.

The shoulder one was probably out. Marginal though.

He copped a shocker from Bucknor in 04 at Brisbane and one in Perth in 08 series when he was playing a brilliant innings.
I have posted 3 controversial decisions from 1999 . Look your earlier post

There was a feeling Tendulkar was getting marginally incorrect decisions 3 times on that tour . That is why he was given MoS despite not being top 2 scorer .

When Bucknor umpires, India were always playing against 12. The Indian batsmen always had to be at the peak of their focus, any ball hits their pads and they were gone, doesn't matter if the ball goes on to hit the stumps or not. 😀

It wasn’t Buckner . And all were marginal decisions. So I will say Sachin was unlucky.

Top tier doesn't end at 6th.
It actually does. Bradman is in a league of his own so it's effectively top five. Not having Viv up there (who used to be a closely fought with Tendulkar once upon a time) in an all-time list looks so odd if he is below Hutton, Lara. And the worst thing is that I know the undeclared judgment on CW is basically if Viv averages 52 instead of 50 he would have auto jumped up a couple places.

Frankly just spoils the exercise, it's like doing a the bowlers list and putting Marshall at 4 or 5. List doesn't hold much legitimacy after an infraction like that. At least gets the basics right.

Won’t bother posting shoulder before wicket one .
Yeah just looked at the videos. The one in Sydney looks quite high. He's on his toes and the ball is way over the knee roll. Bit rough.

The adelaide one is below.

Definitely didn't hit it, you're right. So 2 pretty bad decisions in the 99 series. The funny thing is, I actually think the shoulder before wicket lbw is the least controversial one... it kept very low and imo would've hit the stumps. It was unfortunate because of the unpredictable boucne but I dont think it was a bad decision. Yet it seems to be cited more than the other two you posted which are clearly wrong

I won't personally have Len ahead of Viv, but saying Lara is unacceptable is moronic.

You may be right. There are a lot of different opinions out there.

This one (link below) places Kohli four places ahead of Bradman who ranks number 7.

its only natural that this happens lol

many cant be objective tbh

"If a player had done better than they actually did, they would have been ranked slightly higher than they are" isn't exactly a damning critique on the exercise.

He often coped poor decisions away from home especially in Australia.

He'd have scored at least 3 more hundreds in Australia alone, if not for malicious umpiring.

So you don’t consider Wasim and Donald top tier ? Because they came at 9th and 12th iirc .

The best one was when the muppet ducked into one which was just above knee height then bitched about it when he was rightly given out. Would have gone on to make eight and India only lose by 863 runs if it wasn't given.

Yea there were upto 3 poor decisions in that 99 series out of his 6 innings. People wonder why Tendulkar doesn't have any 'super standout' series during his peak, when in fact poor decisions as well as marginal decisions were a regular theme during his career. He was the most popular player ever and people were bitter and couldn't digest how good and gifted and technically perfect he was. Like Messi/Federer.

Cricket since the introduction of DRS has been a huge blessing and is finally a much more fair sport.

You may be literally the only person in the cricket observing world who considers it illegitimate to rank Lara over Richards - I’m sure others would share your opinion but only you in your wild biases would consider it beyond the pale
