Thought with each year that goes by the memories of the greats & solids who played domestic cricket like it was everything are fading so it's good to get something that maybe shows peaks of players for each era. I knew there would be a good bunch of people on here who would appreciate.

Love this Natal team for the overlapping of eras and obviously their dominance on the Springboks at the time. Roy McLean last FC game in 65/66 who was a maverick batsman and Barry Richards's hero.

As Eric Rowan, Alan Melville, Bruce Mitchell & Dudley Nourse came back for a few years after the war young McGlew, McLean, Waite and Endean made their test debuts in 1951 & along with Goddard debuting in 1955 was the backbone of the 1950s Springbok batting.

The old guard of McGlew, Goddard & McLean there with the starboys Richards, Irvine and Procter. Some decent internationals around them too in Gamsy/Trimborn. Barry Versfeld and Norman Crookes made Springbok squads.

Talking about the fast bowlers of the 80s. The Ump Cyril Mitchley's son, Cyril Mitchley was also a decent quick. There was talk after the 2nd Windies Rebels tour that he was one for the future.

For me the first and second sides were probably the best ones overall. The batting is excellent for a domestic side with Amm, Rushmere, and Callaghan all excellent practitioners at that level around the stars McEwan and Wessels. The Amm/McEwan partnership is still legendary 35 years later. The replacement of Pringle with Maguire really helped the following season's side which still has the excellent batting to remain competitive imo.

The 90/91 side was a bit of a different animal in that it has clearly the best pace bowling, with the emergence of Schultz and Surrey CCC alumnus Rudi Bryson joining the Aussies. This is counteracted by the massive loss of McEwan, and his replacement by a relatively weak cricketer in Martin Venter making a considerably weaker batting outfit. Louis Koen was a much better replacement the following season. Rayment obviously had his moments but was inconsistent and while late career Baptiste was a good domestic bowler I'm not sure he truly replaced Maguire.

Shaw, who was involved in all the sides was, perhaps, a bit of a budget Kourie, but even a budget Kourie is very good for balancing a domestic side. I have Richardson down as a weaker cricketer than isolation era players like Jennings and Tich Smith but he was clearly SA's number one between the Jennings era and the Boucher (should have been Pothas imo but that's neither here nor there) era. I've heard good things of Michau's batting but he doen't really have the record to back it up. I'm assuming Hobson had a similar modus operandi to his bigger brother but wasn't quite as good.

You know your stuff. What is interesting is, Dave Richardson was already in the mix for wicket-keeping in 83/84 V West Indies in the rebel tests. But neither Richardson/Jennings scored a Currie Cup 100 in the 80s. Only doing so in the 90s. Ray was superior with the gloves. Trevor Madsen (Natal) and Noel Day (N TVL) were legends at their Provinces. WP had Richie Ryall who whilst decent batted number 11 sometimes but I think WPs Gavin Pfuhl might have debuted for SA in the 70s as I guess after Lindsay it would have been Irvine/Smith/Pfuhl

I remember the Pothas v Boucher debate at the time but I think the end proved we made the right decision. There were a few occasions but he was clutch. That test win v India and the 438 chase v Australia. Were just some moments where Bouch played those under the radar pressure knocks and I just remember him always doing well against England

EP had some very good players in the 60s/70s but it really went quiet in the late 70s/early 80s & they couldn't win anything with the big names below.

ie Dassie Biggs, Simon Bezuidenhout, Lorrie Wilmot, Graeme Pollock, Chris Wilkins, Ken McEwan, Tony Greig, David Brickett, Peter Pollock, Keith Reid, Rupert Hanley, Kenny Watson.

Natal were a fading force in the 80s (Procter leading them to the 80/81 Currie Cup win with not exactly their strongest team ever) after being at the forefront of producing the best SA cricketers for decades. So it became WP v TVL for a long time.

I wonder if this is how the feud between Wessels and Cook/Rice really started. He came in and got EP cricket back on the map. Wasn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers and things were obviously made worse when they selected Wessels SA captain for the WC in 92 ahead of either of them. He mentions the words entitled to the much loved Cook and Rice. But he was an outsider jumping both sides of the fence so I'm not sure he can come with the holier than though attitude either.
