I'd say they're almost exactly even, because they both had a game that they played extremely well to suit the situation's of their respective teams.

Waugh had a better team than Border though for the greater part of his career. That makes Waugh's style a little less suited to match, imo.

Border batted in the top four for a ton of his time, was a one man band for most of the 80s and his away average is ridiculous.

Border is also definitely Australia's and arguably the world's greatest post-war cricketer. This is a hill I am prepared to die on.
But purely as a batsman Ponting was marginally better. He probably would have been even better had he had the benefit of playing under Border, who would have kicked the **** out of him during his big headed youth.
