NZ domestic season 2023/24

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
A pair of very ordinary looking dismissals for Will Young in this game. The guy's not an opener and his confidence looks shot. NZC should probably be straight with him and let him know that if he's ever playing test cricket again it's probably only as an injury substitute for Rachin or Mitchell.
I'm wondering if they've let him and Nicholls know the only realistic shot at a long term gig is to replace Latham or Conway.

Crikey. 5 down for Canterbury. 24 runs to win. ND with a tiny sniff here.

Dougie only bowled 5 overs again. Injury? And why did Patel bat so low for ND today?

ND lost, so it comes down to the final game where Wellington play ND away. Wellington just needing a draw to win the Shield. ND needing the outright.

Yeah the obsession with Young opening (presumably because he looks so compact) is just dire from NZC.

I get it - before Conway it was the gap, and Young bar the glorious WTC winning cycle loved to throw knocks away himself - but he has never looked like an opener except in very diluted competitions like County Cricket (where any good FC player looks like a God - see that tour we took Rachin and Phillips and let them loose) and in Asia, which is as different to NZ as it gets.

Let the man bat #3 for Central and #4 or lower for NZ. Weight of runs is a thing. If he puts the shoulder in and someone inevitably gets injured or starts completely sucking (Nicholls) then things can turn very quickly for him.

I suppose their obsession with turning every middle order batsman into an offspin allrounder produced Phillips and Macewell. As funny as Phillips' bowling was to everyone but who he rekt, I can't help but feel we'd much rather have the 40+ averaging test batsman version.

Tbf, I think Phillips evolution into a spin bowling alrounder was entirely his own decision. Knew he needed a second string to his bow and decided to throw himself into it. But yeah, he's got so much raw talent with the bat I'd prefer it if that was where his energies were focused.

On Young, you'd have to presume his Test days are by and large done. Part of me wants to blame the establishment for completing ruining the guy, shoehorning him into opening and the fact 12 of his 16 Test innings' are as an opener. Conway was always the guy who should have done that job. But then I look at 15 tons and 43 half-tons at FC level, no 100s and 7 50s at Test level, and I wonder if he just didn't have it mentally to be the 45+ averaging player his ability suggests he could have, anyway. His dismissals this week in the Plunket Shield looked to me to be that of a broken man. Even if he isn't an opener, he still scored five unconverted Test 50s, three of them in the 50s, one 69 and a 2nd game 89. I think a player with a tougher mindset would've converted a couple of those.

And on GP, I don't know why people seem to think he is trading off his batting for his bowling? I don't feel like it's a pick a path, where we go one way with Glenn Phillips averaging 40+ but not bowling, or the current 33.2 and bowling. Not sure if anyone had noticed but GP has energy for Africa. He trains as hard as anyone, and not in a cliche sense - he does. He won't average 10 less with the bat because he bowls, both disciplines will receive plenty of focus.

Best and only thing for Young to do imo is perform exceptionally every chance he gets for NZ in his best format, which is ODIs. Not that the recent ODI world cup gives confidence he'll do that, though I give him a chance. We're better off with him not making the test team unless there's an injury crisis.

Looks like the ODI Champion's Trophy is in twelve months, in Pakistan, and he may be competing with Chapman for a squad place. Chapman in a similar bucket, career-wise.

Heading in to the final round of the season.

Tight race to be the season's top wicket taker. Between Smith, Duffy and Kuggeleijn.

Duffy has been top wicket taker on 3 previous occasions. If he were to do it again. He would equal Stephen Boock doing this 4 times. With only Bob Blair (of the Tangiwai Shield) having done this on more occasions, a whopping 6 times.

Those numbers are a good indication of why Wellington is on track for the title. Kelly has graduated to domestic hero now, plus Severin and Abbas very good prospects.

Unusual to see Younghusband near the top of the wicket takers table - I checked and in six previous seasons, in which he's been in and out of Wellington's FC team, the most wickets he's taken has been eight. In fact, has doubled his career tally this season.

Maybe it’s this season he’s actually been given the senior spinner role. Previously when he’s been in the team he’s been selected as a specialist spinner but treated as the back up to Macewell

He scored what looked like a great hundred for NZ A in India and then followed that up with a terrible next ND season, unfortunately.
Iirc. He had that great tour of India, then missed all/most of the domestic season.

Edit. That happened to Fisher. Maybe I'm mixing them.
