Meaningless without context like I've said before earlier this thread for Ashwin. Once upon a time, outside Asia meant picking 2 spinners all the time.

I am not debating on whether he gets selected or not. I am just stating that outside Asia, he is just okayish player. In Asia, he is ATG level.

Yeah but outside Asia doesn't guarantee that, because conditions do vary. The WI have had a large variety of pitches across their history, which helped them dominate cricket in the past in some part. We've seen conditions in places that are now pace dominated where part timers can take wickets with spin. This sort of distinction to me feels pointless unless you specify pitches rather than just places.

Ashwin and Kuldeep have a good case for being ahead of him and I doubt they would have three spinners. Having said that, I still see Jadeja appearing but like 2018 and 2021, not the entire series.

So Jadeja ain't a confirmed pick in the current level much less an ATG side.
We are picking 1 side for all conditions in the ATG side. He provides great balance in this regard despite not being an ideal pick for every set of conditions (like just about every other player).

Think about it, you say you want 5 bowlers but in doing that you're weakening the batting and the bowling. Jadeja isn't as good a batsman as VVS nor as good a bowler as Kumble.
It's a pointless statement. Bit like saying Gilchrist isn't as good a batsman as Waugh and also isn't as good a keeper as Healy. The whole point is if there's one spot to fill, he's the ideal option. The gap between him and Kumble is also not nearly big enough for this to be a bad choice.

He's not keeping out an ATG batsman, nor an ATG bowler.

The only reason he didn't play all the Tests in 2021 was because of the concussed hamstring and getting his finger broken after he got 4 wickets and a runout at #SCGSoSpinny. You'd be crazy to say he doesn't start every game. This is like saying Cummins shouldn't play every Test in Asia. Intentionally losing is not a viable strategy here.
What's your XI in Australia then?

The same issues apply to several other countries.

Actually you make a good case to leave out Ashwin for Jadeja outside India. That way you get his batting and Kumble is the best overseas bowler. Dropping your best overseas spinner is just not on.

So I was told that this was the thread where we get to determine who is/isn't an ATG bowler. If the definition is something like top 20 bowlers all time (or maybe 25ish with pre war bowlers), then Jim Laker isn't in there.

Ashwin is easily in as one of only 3 modern spinners (other two names not needing mentioning). O'Reilly would definitely take a pre war spot, with Grimmett being a margin call.

Laker isn't even close to the conversation of the above spin pantheon.

We can talk about overseas performances as much as we want but think Ashwin has evolved as a spinner much more than Kumble. He keeps making changes in his bowling and adding new arsenals which is why he can probably get in ahead of Kumble too and you get a proper no.8 batsman for an ATG side.

I don't think Ashwin can be argued as a better overseas bowler than Kumble anymore than Kumble be argued as better at home.
