We can all read this thread earlier and see how the usual suspects decide to downgrade as a consistent theme to make your argument rather than discuss Ashwin's record on its own merits.

I can't speak for Subz, but Lillee for me is that last category because he doesn't have the complete record of some of the others, but a lot of that was because he was injured.
He wasn't intentionally left out of matches and primarily failed when he wasn't. But that aside and the factor that pushed over the line, WSC...

Like Chappell that seals it for me, additionally also the rest of the world matches that were tests at the time. He had epic performances against the best in the world where everyone else disappeared. Lillee, I. V. A., Chappell and to a lesser extent Barry cemented their greatness in possibly the most intense cricket in history. You don't have to agree, but that matters for me.

i think its hilarious that he brought up those names and then when pointed why they have holes in their record that deserve as much as scrutiny as Ashwin its now the rest degrading other players while he continues maintaining an Elysium tier atg list

I believe you and I basically are on the same page here.When I make these teams Lillee probably doesn't make my 2nd one but he is in the short list and in contention. Most importantly though the gentleman made the Cricinfo all time team, one of the two most prestigious and established all time teams (the Wisden one being the other, and ours if course lol), so can't say he's totally not in contention.

The argument was there to be had, but he didn't engage at all. He keeps misreading what I post and goes off on tangents. What's your problem really? Is this acceptable from him or what?

I've skimmed though half a dozen pages and found nothing really new - just Lillee brought into the argument, an irrelevant reference reference to Sangakarra and personal attacks from certain quarters. @kyear and a couple of others have added rational contributions but generally this has degenerated into a slanging match simply because few agree on who/what constitutes an ATG.

In my defense, I was repeatedly trying to steer the chat away from Lillee and back on topic, but unfortunately the same tired tactic of just slagging off better players to make Ashwin look more palatable as an ATG has been in play since the beginning of this thread.

We've had heated discussions before on Imran, Kallis, etc. without it getting this nasty but it seems on certain cricketers a slew of posters just seem incapable of rational discussion without devolving into personal insults and petty red herrings. They just get annoyed because I don't take a back foot approach and cave into their demands.

I've only been to Cricketweb once but the posters just allow you to troll so easily, you don't even have to think about being subtle or having good bait or anything like that. You just let the posters do the work of getting mad.

It's the result of a certain group creating an echo chamber, making them think they're justified in immature insulting attacks on one guy that isn't falling in with the party line. Keep this thread going IMO to hopefully isolate it here and avoid infecting the whole forum
