now the question is if

a)Atherton was a top 3 opener of his time?
b)if he wasnt, was it because there were other great openers or because he wasnt that good and the toughest opener gig masked that?

this is ignoring longevity since Athers has Rohit beat there

At his peak after 69 Tests Atherton averaged 192 balls faced per Test.

Contrastly Rahul Dravid averaged 190 balls faced per Test over the course of his career.

This stat could be dissected in many different ways but not bad going from a 1990s opener who played half his Tests in England.
