What are legitimate excuses to ignore bad parts of a players' record?

Playing with injuries (not broken toenails) is understood as a legitimate excuse. What else?

What about captaincy burdens ala Botham? Debuting very young? Playing very old?

Statsguru vs actually seeing and contextualising performances

Warne in India bowled damn well, he just faced a couple GOAT level bats in those conditions who prepared like hell for him. It’s not damming.

same thing with Ashwin in Australia. Anyone who actually saw him in the last two series would know how much of a boss he was.

Didn’t he get smacked around Das and co as well? There were definitely some **** players in there that whacked him to kingdom come.
And I don’t mean Navjot Singh Siddhu who was a good player of spin

it was two tests. It doesn’t matter in his overall assessment. If someone looks back at his career and says he didn’t perform in India, that’s just poor analysis leave asked the mitigating factors
Yep, it is pretty dumb to evaluate a player as being bad in a certain location when you have limited data. If a player has rather mediocre data over an extended period then you can point to it more.

Atherton's career is one big greatest hits of stuff mentioned in this topic

Played 75% of his tests opening the batting against McWarne, Ambrose/Walsh, Pollock/Donald and Waqar/Wasim

Had some hectic back issues

Captaincy burden
Atherton was who I was referring to, he was dealt a pretty shitty hand for the timing of his career.

Hard for anyone to survive the entire gauntlet he went through.

Had the roughest path to success of any player I can think of.

Also had to survive the England selectors of the 1990s.
