Trent Boult has a best of 6/30 despite being the best of our three fast bowlers. I remember thinking along the same lines as you back when they were in their pomp, i.e. why weren't they getting the big hauls? You could see the reason when you looked over the scorecards; it was amazing how often they had like 3 wickets each.

I actually did the numbers a few years and the number of innings per seven-for for fast bowlers had risen quite dramatically. Boult, Southee and Wagner/whoever else was third seamer is a good but not brilliant attack. To me it feels like when teams collapse these days, once they've started they'll implode to whoever happens to be bowling at the time unless they're bowling very badly. Also bowlers will bowl shorter spells even when taking wickets. When Sikandar Bakht took 8/69 he bowled a 21 over spell. No-one would do that these days.

Decent batting session for nz up to tea. If they lose a maximum of one next session they will be right back in it you’d reckon

Southee now averaging 29.98

Unless he does a Swann and retires before the second innings, his 100th test match present will be a career average over 30.

A decent session for our lot there, but to state the bleeding obvious still a long way behind the game and these two need to bat the next session. Pitch looks like it will flatten out so there are runs to be had tomorrow, but we've got to get there intact

A pretty good session for us only losing the one wicket and wiping 43 runs off the lead.

If we can make it through to stumps losing no more wickets or maybe losing one more wicket we will be back in the game.
