From Franklyn Rose all the way to Dave Bernard Jr.

Yes, I watched it.

There are some from the 70's that rated Roberts the best of the quartet. I don't agree, but many regarded him pretty highly, I didn't get to see it myself and if I recall correctly went solo for a bit and was both a cerebral and skiilful and a ruthless fast bowler.

But yes, there is an argument to have him below Walsh.

Actually looking closer, the only thing you can really point to for Roberts is a better record in Australia, but lets not pretend the two Australian teams they faced were similar in quality.

Also Roberts was relatively poor at home. I don’t think longevity can be ignored at all in this case, Walsh played for twice as long, hell he has more wickets at home and more wickets away than Roberts has in his whole career.

I have conceded that Walsh can be rated higher. I don't believe he's better than the other 2 though

Yeah I’m not saying that.

I’m just saying that clearly I think (me! of all people!) has been fooled by peer rating up until now re: Roberts/Walsh I am thoroughly ashamed of myself.

Walsh and Garner also get super bonus points for succeeding in NZ unlike their other great pacers and many of their great batsmen too.

I'm always railing against peer rating, especially to @subshakerz and this does prove why.

Way too subjective.

The thing that always frustrates me about Walsh is that it clearly looks like he chucked his effort balls, a charge that definitely can't be applied to the other 5.

My rating of Andy Roberts is probably influenced by his performance against Australia at the WACA in 75/76.
In that match Australia posted a 300+ first innings total thanks to a fine knock by Ian Chappell. Holding was the pick of the bowlers with 4.
In reply the W.I. dominated the Australian attack led by Lillee and Thomson. Both had over 100 scored off them at a run rate in excess of 6 per over.
Batting a second time, Australia's upper order was destroyed by Roberts who took 7-54. Bernard Julien cleaned up the tail and W.I. won by an innings + runs.
That spell by Roberts ranks as one of the best examples of ferocious fast bowling I have seen.

Roberts' peer rating was in a fallow period for pacers in the 70s so it can be contextualized.

Walsh not making an impact in Australia is a bit of a downer for me. His longevity though is a strong point. I'm split now on Walsh/Roberts.
