'Footwork to pace bowlers is a myth' and other hot takes

Philander was too conditions dependent. At that pace he needed help from the wicket, which he got often
Philander was too short to bowl at that pace if he didn't get at least SOME thing from the pitch.

It's funny how people don't talk about how height can make up for some level of skill in fast bowling (probably because we like to think that "best" corresponds to "most skilled"). But it's inherently obvious to anyone whose played at any level.

True. Haze for example would be severely nerfed without his height.

Yep. Kemar Roach is the only exception who comes to mind, but he was assisted by the Duke ball. He has figured out the kookaburra now.

Wagner another not fast shorty but once he lost his top end it was all over.

Conversely Southee and Holder have survived as true medium pacers because they're tall/very tall respectively.

82mph is like....a very common speed for international seam bowlers in general though. Even ones we think of as relatively quick. Not as a TOP speed, but as a typical speed.

Yeah I feel like a bit of mythology has built around Wagner being "the slow bouncer bowler". He was more like the brisk, skiddy bouncer bowler and it wasn't until (ironically given how successful he was ) circa the 2019/20 Australia tour that he had regressed to "just barely quick enough". From 2021/22 onwards he's been downright medium pace.

I was responding to the comment, "Philander was too short to bowl at that pace."
That's the second time this week that you've had a 'shot' at my posts.
Marshall wasn't a moderately skilled fast-medium bowler, which is what the point seemed to be about.

Cricinfo used to have a humor page dedicated to the the things commentators say to fill up airtime. Here are some of the excerpts:

Needless run-out
What it means
They needed this dismissal like a hole in the head.
What it really means There may be needed run-outs, but don't ask me for an example right now.
Possibly coined by Geoffrey "Run me out and you'll be talking out of the other side of your face" Boycott

Doesn't matter how they come
What it's supposed to mean Batting isn't a beauty contest
What it really means Hello, I'm Ravi Shastri
Best used just after... A No. 11 has Chinese cut one for four while falling over and decapitating a close-in fielder

Genuine allrounder
That's right, plenty of posers out there No one like Sobie
Or Immy Or Beefy
Used most often for Lower-order batsman scoring a half-century
Like R Ashwin? Nah, he's a genuine batsman

A good leave
Happy holidays eh?
Nope, just wisely letting a ball pass outside off stump.
What's so good about not scoring off a ball? Staying alive to score off others.
Sounds philosophical Indeed. Cricket's pretty deep.
But when are leaves hard to find? When Sehwag's batting? No, when it's autumn. You're as shallow as cricket is deep

He means business
Not to be confused with A player auction
Also not to be confused with Match-fixing
What to watch out for when you hear it Ugly swipes across the line.

Building a platform
Not to be confused with
A retired 1970s cricketer who works for event organizers
Used when Batsmen are scoring at 5 runs per over in Twenty20, three runs per over in ODIs, or zero runs per over in Test cricket.
What it really means He hasn't got the muscle to hoick it.

To be fair, I think that Philander is far, far beyond moderately skilled. It's just that he's BOTH a touch slow AND too short to have a Marshallesque career (still a very damn good one though, imho).
