I think it's Kuggeleijn. The Basin will likely favour a bounce bowler, and whilst Rachin isn't the bowler Santner is, he's at least a stop gap option to bowl with the same arm, whilst Phillips turns it the other way (whilst also being part-time).

The sad thing is that if Scott K hadn't done anything horrible, we'd very likely be backing him as the no-brainer selection. Consistent wickets at FC level, took bags against Australia A - also scored a century against them - and his back of a length, bang it in sort of style might work and is what we need as a third seamer/4th seamer. If we want to beat Australia, I think he has to play. It's just in an ideal world, I don't want him to.

I also can't see Santner scoring runs v Australia. They'll just bounce the **** out of him.
I mean, I can see the logical cricketing arguments based on short term form, but every time I've watched Kuggeleijn, he has pace but little else. Unless that's changed in the last 12-24 months, he's exactly the sort of bowler that Australia could take a liking to as it suits the Australian style. He's also just been overseas playing hit and giggle and like all of our bowlers (other than those who played against South Africa) hasn't played FC in months.

I tend to think it's Santner. My reasoning is that NZ have already told Wagner his career is done. That would mean that if NZ were going with 4 seamers, they'd have no one in reserve in the squad to play in the event they have an injury on the morning of the game. If, on the other hand, the intention is to play Santner then they have 3 seamers, plus one in reserve. Might just be wishful thinking though.

Southee under scrutiny.

Finally they're addressing the elephant in the room but a series too late for mine.

Although tbf I haven't been quite so against him now Jamieson is injured, but before then the prospect of him potentially costing any of Henry, Jamieson & O'Rourke a spot assuming we only played the 3 seamers would have pissed me off no end.

Now Jamieson's injured he's arguable the 3rd choice anyway, along with the likes of Scott K, Smith & Ferguson - who I hope we haven't written off at Test level based on his FC record and extra pace.

Mmmm...I'm not sure. Wagner is still in the squad for the Basin. It says this on the NZC website: The 37-year-old pace-bowler will not be in the starting XI for the first Test at the Cello Basin Reserve and will be released from the squad ahead of the second Test in Christchurch.

So are they keeping him in the squad as a goodwill gesture at the Basin, or do they think he needs to stay as seamer back-up because they want four seamers, but they don't want four seamers/they will introduce a new squad member (Duffy, you'd think) at Hagley?

I don't think it's as cut and dry as anyone thinks. Not me, not you.

Yeah, I dunno. Maybe they think they need the extra pace, and skiddy pace, given Shamar Joseph and Jamal gave Australia issues over the summer.

If the selected wanted a Shamar Joseph bowler who was consistently in the mid-140s surely Ferguson bowling short spells would have been a better option opposed to SK especially after seeing him swing it in the t20s

No idea why the t20's are played before the test matches when is that ever a good idea
Yep makes no sense. Plus surely playing the format afterwards get the players off to IPL/World Cup in a little bit of form prior to it.

Rather than having to chop and change their way of playing as they are doing here.

Just saw in an article that NZ has just one win in 27 tests against the Aussies in the last 3 decades. That's quite a terrible record. Hopefully they can correct it a bit this series.
Even worse they have lost 9 out of the last 10 home tests. Drawn game was rain affected

None of that will matter now though as I can see nothing but two innings wins for them
