Related stattage: Root is the 9th player to score at least 10 tons against their favourite opponent, and the first to do so against India.

100 internet points if you know the others.

Root seems impregnable in SC conditions like these when he plays normally. He needs to come out of his state of denial and accept he's far better without the circus sideshow strokes, at least whe he's just come in. A reverse scoop can never be as safe as a forward defensive. You're essentially taking physically sound weight distribution out of the picture and relying almost exclusively on hand-eye reflex
Nailed it.

It looks like he did come out of his state of denial, not that he or England would ever admit it

Pretty solid start. Tendulkar in slightly the wrong place but you get a point nonetheless. Lara, Richards and Border are incorrect

Bazball is a media myth, neither McCullum or Stokes use that term, in fact they hate it, it's more about batsmen batting with a more positive intent.

Crawley and Duckett are both naturally attacking batsmen that like to take the bowlers on so it suits them playing that way.

Pope and Bairstow don't seem to play any differently, both are capable of playing great knocks but are inconsistent and Foakes bats as per normal.

Stokes doesn't play any differently under McCullum either, he usually starts slowly and then starts to take the bowlers on once he is set.

Root is the only English batsman that I have noticed a real difference in approach with him trying to play the funky ramp shots or reverse sweeps.

I doubt he was forced to play that way and just decided to do that himself but I think he's realised that he's better off batting normally like he did today.
Bazball might be overblown but there's definitely elements to it that are real. Stokes turned into a slogger before he reined it in early on, and Root changed his game to the detriment of his consistency. That reverse lap might have been the best thing to happen to him - to remind him he's the best batsman in the world or near-on, and he was squandering it a bit by playing silly buggers. I don't think he was forced to but seemed to get wrapped up in the team approach.

Whatever approach they take, they need to be smart and humble enough to adapt when it isn't working - not to say 'it won't work all the time ' and shrug off failures. The Basin loss to NZ a classic example where they had their foot on our throats, made a overly bold choice to enforce the follow-on then batted like frenzied fools in the chase.

I wonder whether Gower has 12 against Australia.

EDIT
Nope, only 9. Same as Hammond.

so how does Baz sum all of this up with his “ethos”?

is Bazball really about all out attack or

can Bazball be about sticking to your guns?

Foakes ‘ strength - slow calm innings - wasn’t rushed today and paid dividends

Root’s strength - Being busy at the crease - did that today scored a ton

I think the evolution of Bazball is to get the best out of each player rather than to fit everyone into one mould of player
So, what Australia tries to do then?
