ATG is a lethal weapon, but only having one weapon isn't always going to work. Penetrative power is good, but you need others to keep things tight.Balanced doesn't mean more penetrative. ATG is a lethal weapon.

If this is an accurate career-length study, it would seem that the low thirties figure for Smith must have referred to a shorter timeframe - maybe a single series or season.
And averaged in the the hundreds against them.Yeah unfortunately, the WI attacks he faced before especially in Australia were complete garbage.
Good bowlers aren't going to win you games against the top guys or on difficult tours.ATG is a lethal weapon, but only having one weapon isn't always going to work. Penetrative power is good, but you need others to keep things tight.
No, but good bowlers are going to win you series more often than a single ATG one....Good bowlers aren't going to win you games against the top guys or on difficult tours.

Boult Southee and Wagner bowled in 78 innings together, NZ took 711 wickets @ 28.50 and won 24 matches.Good bowlers aren't going to win you games against the top guys or on difficult tours.
No such thing. I think all 3 of them should be included in the top tier, but there's normally objection against Viv, Lara and Smith separately for different reasons from different posters. The thread being premised on the notion of Lara not being a top tier batter is excellent trolling.
I dont think so actually. Three Vaas' arent winning me more than one Murali. No, but good bowlers are going to win you series more often than a single ATG one....
Refer Coronis' post above..... Vaas, Herath and someone like Shami and Umesh is indeed better than Murali with Vishwa Fernando, Asoka De Silva and Kumar DharmasenaI dont think so actually. Three Vaas' arent winning me more than one Murali.
Abject garbage.Yeah unfortunately, the WI attacks he faced before especially in Australia were complete garbage.
So many variables in there. Strength of teams / quality of opposition (minnows etc). NZ played in an especially competitive era, one that doesn't exist today.Refer Coronis' post above..... Today’s era of test cricket is not competitive? So many variables in there. Strength of teams / quality of opposition (minnows etc). NZ played in an especially competitive era, one that doesn't exist today.
Not really true here. Neil Wagner, for once had played a grand total of 6 games against SL, WI, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe combined. I highly doubt that both Boult and Southee played in any of those 6 games, as per the stats. There are probably more weaker teams now than then, but any strong team hardly jumps at them with all of their strength. So many variables in there. The only time Smith toured the WI he faced Taylor, Bishoo, Holder and Gabriel. He averaged 141 and Voges 167. Maybe if he toured WI now, yeah the attack is decent but that's left to be seen. He's either faced garbage wi away or at home (this series excepted). The WI attack he faced in WI I would say is decent with Roach, Holder and Alzarri Joseph all being really good in WI. And you have to say, his last innings against them in Australia is probably the best innings against WI in the last 30 years.....
Well yeah then, he has bashed the hell out of WI. Despite that, I would say his last innings against them is a genuinely Great innings. The only time Smith toured the WI he faced Taylor, Bishoo, Holder and Gabriel. He averaged 141 and Voges 167. I wouldn't go that far tbhWell yeah then, he has bashed the hell out of WI. Despite that, I would say his last innings against them is a genuinely Great innings.
Of course you wouldn’tI wouldn't go that far tbh
You do know I've said I basically rank all 3 of them equally.Of course you wouldn’t
Given the match situation and the way Shamar Joseph bowled, I personally definitely think it was a great innings from a great game. You do know I've said I basically rank all 3 of them equally.
I'm talking about 1 innings against a weak team, that's all I meant.
I guess I'm looking at it differently. The best batsman of our generation vs a weak inexperienced team of debutants in a chase that well all believed would be a cake walkGiven the match situation and the way Shamar Joseph bowled, I personally definitely think it was a great innings from a great game.
