I'm still wondering how on earth Gerrard/Beale won that title with Rangers.

Because they did a good job. They weren't just one season wonders, there was a gradual build up over 3 years which included excellent results in Europe.

I think one issue is that Beale stumbled onto a tactical system at Rangers midway through 2019/20 which worked really well for a season and a half, but which hasn't really worked since either at Rangers or when Gerrard used it at Aston Villa.

Gerrard was absolutely the right man for the job at Rangers, the club needed a figurehead that we could rally round. His stint at Rangers is a case of right man at the right club at the right time.

One big issue he had at Villa would have been that everyone and their dog knew his aim was to move to Liverpool (if he'd done the job Emery had done he would be a shoe-in to go there this summer), which wouldn't have endeared him to Villa fans. The other issue is that you're in a much more competitive league against much better managers; he was still young and probably needed at least until the end of the season at Rangers to iron out some of the flaws he still has.

Beale is a good coach but it's clear from his stint at Rangers and Sunderland he hasn't got the first idea how to manage. As well as being a dislikeable ****, he clearly has no presence or aura about him which makes players buy into his ideas when he doesn't have someone like Gerrard or Gary McAllister beside him.

Not doubting they did a good job, but they have been completely incapable of doing one since. They have failed all over the place. The Rangers spell is looking like a complete one off that they cannot replicate.
