Richards is in the 2nd tier after Bradman. So too are Lara and Smith. That makes Hammond the answer to this thread. I am voting here the batsman who I think is the worst of the options.
Somehow only now seeing this, was a little surprised to initially have seen a vote besides @Prince EWS and @Coronis

Understand the reasoning and agree with you, those three belong with the the 3 above them. No doubt

For me personally if I were to divide my top batsmen into tiers it would be something like this (going chronologically within tiers :))

Bradman

Hobbs Sobers Tendulkar

Hammond Lara Smith

Sutcliffe Hutton

Chappell Gavaskar Kallis Sangakkara

Barrington Richards Ponting

edit: Huh. Aside from Lara vs Smith the chronological thing with the tiers follows my actual rankings. Cool

Honestly don't see what Hammond has done to place him above Smith and Lara.

Similarly for the entire tier and Barrington above Viv.

Kallis, Sangakkara and Barrington makes it particularly suspect. Just saying .

Honestly thinking about this and have to disagree. Even from my days batting in junior cricket, it's easier to restrict shots and score slowly than to try to accelerate. That legit calls for more skill.
I have to disagree with this disagreement then; as when I used to play (i.e., until 2 years ago) 2nd Division; I always found attacking much easier than to bat with great patience. But could just be me though....

Viv averages 50 and didn't face the best bowling attack of his era. The fact he's topping this is insane to me.
It does alwats make me laugh a bit when certain players are ranked lower purely because of lesser performances against the best teams compared to players who didn't even have to face that challenge.

That's more of a mental challenge though. It's easier to maintain a 50 average as a slow scoring batsman who has cut out shots, than a free scorer.

Again, it might just be a mental issue or an issue with my concentration; but I have seen Dravid bat like Sehwag but can't really expect to see the reverse here.....

If Kohli manages to get his average above 40 in Eng and NZ, would you rate him above Ponting?
I mean, you kinda have too...... Honestly, I am not the biggest fan of either in Tests (Was of Virat, but....); but Ponting clearly was worse in India than Kohli anywhere; peak or not be damned..... Kohli has the 2018 series in England and he played only 4 times in NZ; if he manages to play like pre 2020 for 5 more years, I think I will.

It's fine to rate them above Hammond. I find Hammond's record more and more overrated with deeper digging. The quality of the attacks he got most of his runs against looks utterly abysmal. Lots of dreadful Australian attacks in the late 20s and early 30s and he really piled the runs on against the other minnows of that era too.

Hutton's record is infinitely more impressive imo.

I know that. I’m just making fun of someone elses post :)

Is it the best team of the era, or the best team they faced?

And let's not pretend that Viv faced any easy attacks in his career, no minnows at all.
