I think they want Short to actually get some experience batting lower down so he's a more useful squad option. It's not like he's proven himself as an opener though so it'd be good for his confidence at the level to allow him to have success where he's comfortable before trying to shoehorn him into a utility.
Opening's not exactly the worst place to bat these days if the conditions are good for batting. Hard ball that pings off the bat and field up so that anything going past or over the outfield is four. But overall it's hard to see why you'd have the choice between Short and McGurk and open with the latter when the former is more experienced and has a bit more of an all-round game compared to McGurk who mostly scores in leg side swishes. It doesn't make much sense with the actual selections.

Whatever it takes!!!
Just on the flight back from Adelaide and having a chat with my fellow passenger, good friend and former Australia player Callum Fergusson. Terrific bloke.
Felt that guy deserved more chances. Hopefully he is doing well with the commentary gigs etc.

That's just poorly played from Smith, nothing wrong with the pitch

Opening is the best place to bat in white ball cricket by a long way

What the **** is that shot by Marnus. He didn't hit it thankfully but seriously, what is going on there

Marnus genuinely looks like he doesn't know which way the ball is going to move from forde. He's cooked. Needs some time off or some luck to get him in the middle for longer.

Yeah he's a case where I think he needs to go away for a month and just work on his technique. He's getting turned around by nothing balls on off stump.

Bit worrying that Head also has to go away and refresh. Who's the aussie batting coach?

Is that Mackenzie Harvey still on the bench? I understood it at the MCG because he's a local but they really flew him up to Sydney to be a specialist sub fielder? Is it because he's not good enough to play the Shield?

I don't like it, too similar to English cheating tactics of having a gun sub fielder
